After an illness of four days duration from pneumonia, Mr. Paul Stagg, died at 8:40 o'clock at his residence at Eunice last Sunday night December 1. The deceased had not been enjoying very good health for the past several years and his end was not unexpected for he had had several attacks of the same malady which disabled him a great deal. He had reached the ripe age of 74 years and 8 months, and although very feeble he managed to look after his business. On his way to and from his place of business he always greeted everybody, and every time he happened on the streets his same cordial greeting was extended to rich or poor, young or old. And for that, all who knew him were shocked, barbed with pain and sorrow when the news of his death was proclaimed. He was born in this parish at Grand Prairie, April 1st., 1838. At the age of 24 years he answered the call of the South and served in the Confederate army in a Tennessee Regiment. He has since been admitted as a member of R. E. Lee Camp No. 14. Shortly after his return he engaged in business in Washington and was junior partner in the firm of Dubuisson & Stagg. Later he took advantage of an opportunity to open up a store on the home place, at Grand Prairie, the partnership of Dubuisson & Stagg was dissolved. Having been very successful in this business he was able to buy the home place after the death of his father in 1870. For 34 years he managed this plantation and decided to move to Eunice, where he established a mercantile business. He took an active part in promoting the First National Bank of Eunice. It was during his term as a member of the Police Jury that this parish was placed on a cash basis. Although in this office for several terms, it was the only public office he ever held. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention at New Orleans in 1879. He reared three families in his life's career. To his first wife, who was Miss Ozama Roy, three children were born, two sons, Henry, a Jesuit priest at Augusta, Ga., and Armand, City Clerk of Opelousas, and a daughter, Rosa, who died a nun of the Sacred Heart, in 1904. After the death of his first wife, he married Miss Marguerite Fontenot, who died after giving birth to three children, Myra, Alida (Mrs. Alfred Fontenot) and Lamar - all living. For the third and last time he married Miss Camille Dardeau, who survives him with four children, Camille, Apoline, Lydie and George. Besides which he leaves three brothers, Adolphe, Etienne, and Alex, and two sisters, Mrs. Ed Dubuisson and Mrs. Ernest Lafleur. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church Tuesday morning and interment in the Catholic cemetery at Eunice. The services were conducted by Rev. Father Chambon, who delivered a most impressive sermon, in which he touched upon the many noble qualities of the deceased, and brought forcibly to the minds of his auditors, the many responsible duties that he had been called upon to perform, and which had been done with the credit of the public. Father L. H. Stagg, S. J., son of the deceased, assisted in the ceremonies. Out of respect to his memory, all business in Eunice was suspended. All the children of the Convent, and public school attended the funeral in a body. Additional Comments: Paul Stagg was the son of John Philippe Gabriel Stagg and Josephine Guillory. He is buried in the Saint Paul Cemetery located in Eunice, St. Landry Parish, LA. www.findagrave.com memorial # 5805451 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/stlandry/obits/s/stagg5543gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/lafiles/ File size: 4.1 Kb
