(Opelousas, La.) 1868-1878, October 22, 1870, Image 2 DIED At his residence, in Old Grand Prairie, on the 8th inst. of yellow fever, PHILIPPE STAGG, Sr., aged 64 years and 24 days. The announcement, of the death of this good and venerate citizen will be received with deep regret throughout the Parish of St Landry, where he resided for a period of nearly fifty years. Mr. Stagg was born in the city of New Orleans, on the 14th of September, 1806. His father being a native of the city of New York land of that sterling Holland race that figures so honorably in the annals of that city; his mother was a Fusillier of the Parish of St. Mary. The deceased came to this Parish at the age of seventeen years, and for some time after his arrival he served as a clerk in the store of Lousillier Bros. in the town of Opelousas, after which he married and removed to Bayou Bœuf, still an unsettled wilderness. He there, with the labor of his own hands, opened a plantation, and laid the foundation of the fortune and prosperity which he for a long period subsequently enjoyed. The death of no man in the Parish could leave a greater void in the hearts of so numerous a circle of relatives, friends and neighbors. He raised a family of sixteen children, nine of whom were sons: of the latter seven survive, all residents of this parish, and like their lamented father, distinguished as good citizens and honorable men. The good influence of a life and character such as that of the subject of this brief notice will not cease with the term of his natural life, but remain a valued legacy to his bereaved family, and a grateful memory to the wide circle of friends and beneficiaries who remain to lament his death.
