Was A Prominent Capitalist of This Section ... Rose from A Day Carpenter to A Monied Man. There passed away Thursday, February 9, 1911, a man who rose from a day laborer as a carpenter, to a leading capitalist. And he did this handicapped with the disadvantages of a limited education. Reared in the timber section of St. Landry, he came to Opelousas while yet a young man. Tutored in woodwork by his long connection with sawmills and timber, he was a skilled carpenter. After a few years' residence in Opelousas, he moved to Crowley, when that town was just being built. There he worked as a day laborer. Returning to Opelousas, he engaged in the lumber business, and it was the lumber business which started him on the road to financial success. In fact his success was phenomenal, and after some thirteen years of active life in that business, he retired and became a capitalist. He was a strong, robust, healthy man, and two weeks ago when it was told about town that he was suffering from a stroke of paralysis, it caused a general surprise. He lingered, semiconscious, with occasional attacks of apoplexy. The third and last occurred Tuesday night, and on Thursday night, at 8:15 o'clock, he breathed his last. Mr. Stewart was aged 56 years, 3 months and 5 days. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock; services being held in the Baptist church, and interment in the Protestant cemetery. He leaves two children: Willie Stewart and Mrs. J. B. Brock. Additional Comments: NOTE: James T. Stewart is buried in the Myrtle Grove Cemetery located in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, LA. www.findagrave.com memorial # 137657704 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/stlandry/obits/s/stewart5909gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/lafiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
