The death of this sturdy citizen deprives our parish of one of its foremost men. Since his residence here, which dates back to 1182, he had won the esteem and confidence of, we hesitate not to say, every man, woman and child with whom he became acquainted, and those who knew him by reputation. His name was synonymous with honesty, stalwartness of character, mental capacity and beneficence. Born in Memphis, Tenn., in 1830, he left that place for Greensboro, Ala., when but four years old, and was reared at the latter place. While yet a boy he served his apprenticeship in a printing office, and in early manhood went to Mobile, Ala., and served in various capacities on different papers there, until he became business manager of the Mobile Register, one of the largest and most influential dalies of that State, which still exists. He left the newspaper business in 1879, and moved to Arkansas, where he remained two years before coming to St. Landry parish, La. Mr. Stokes was a newspaper man of conspicuous ability. While his active newspaper career was confined mostly to the business department, he had worked in the reportorial and editorial departments to some extent, and was a clear, succinct, forceful writer, and his voluntary contributions to the press of this parish were always looked for with eagerness by editor and reader. He engaged in the lumber and farming business in St. Landry until about five years ago, when he confined his time to the working of his splendid plantation situated in Bellevue, he raised blooded cattle and horses. Mr. Stokes was married twice. His first wife, Mary Ann Baker, he married at Bickley Landing, Ala., in October, 1855, and she died here in December, 1889. To this union were born Joe, Jeter, Mrs. A. Dietlein and Frank. His second wife, who survives him, was Mrs. Allen, and they were married at New Iberia in February, 1894. The mortal remains were interred in the Methodist cemetery on Tuesday evening, at 3 o'clock, after funeral services in the Methodist church. Mrs. Panl Foster writes very touching of his devotion to Christianity and his God, under the head of "Missionary Notes." The Clarion extends its sincere condolences to the bereaved ones.
