THOMPSON. - At the family residence, in Opelousas, on Sunday morning, October 28, 1906, at 7 o'clock, Dr. William M. Thompson, aged 56 years, 10 months and 3 days. Interment in Catholic cemetery, after solemnization of funeral rites in Catholic Church, on Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Dr. Thompson was the only one remaining of the distinguished pioneer physicians of Opelousas, for, although his age would not indicate it, he had practiced medicine for thirty-four years, beginning at the early age of 21 years. Dr. Thompson was born in Opelousas on December 25th, 1849, the son of Colonel James M, and Celestine (Dupre) Thompson. He received his literary education chiefly in the famous old Franklin College of Opelousas, where so many of St. Landry's distinguished men obtained their sole education. At the age of eighteen he entered the medical department of Tulane University, New Orleans, from which institution he graduated in 1872, with honors. In the competitive examinaiion (sic) for the position of resident student in the Charity Hospital, a much coveted honor, he was successful over a large class, and for three years he occupied that position. Immediately upon completion of his course he came to his home in Opelousas and began the practice of profession. In the year 1876 he married Miss Kate Ryan, daughter of Judge M. Ryan, of Alexandria, and after his marriage moved to Alexandria and practiced there for about two years, when he returned to Opelousas, and has practiced here continuously ever since, enjoying at all times a lucrative practice and occupying a prominent place among St. Landry's eminent physicians. He filled the office of Coroner of this parish for eight years. Dr. Thompson has enoyed (sic) splendid health until a few months ago, when he was struck with a partial stroke of paralysis, and although he went away and consulted eminent specialists, nothing could be done for him, and he gradually went down in health until death came to relieve his suffering and deprive a family of a devoted parent and the community of a good citizen.
