(Opelousas, La.) 1917 - 1921, September 08, 1920, Image 1 LOUIS AMBROISE VALIN Died Saturday afternoon the 4th inst., at his home on the Caledonia plantation, Louis Ambroise Valin, aged 77 years, 10 months and 14 days. The funeral took place at the Catholic church, with interment in that cemetery, Sunday afternoon at 4 p. m. Mr. Louis Ambroise Valin, nicknamed "Boy" by which name he was universally known, was an old land mark of Ante-bellum days. He was born in this parish and lived here throughout his entire life. When the drum beat sounded for her sons to rally to the Stars and Bars, young Valin enlisted and served his state and the Southland until its flag was furled at Appomattox. Returning home, he farmed on the Bayou Boeuf, at or near Garland Station; thereafter in Prairie Basse, and for thirty some odd years he continued to farm at his present home on the little Teche, where he died. The circumstances under which he purchased his home, then known as the Caledonia plantation, was an event in the life of the deceased, worthy of narration in connection with his death. The firm of Estilettie & Dupre attorneys at law, of which the writer was the junior partner, had upon several occasion, been approached by Mr. Valin to look after an inheritance which he supposed he possessed in France. The writer ridiculed the idea, but Mr. Estilette finally took up the matter with the proper authorities when it was ascertained there were som five thousand dollars awaiting his proof of heirship. This being accomplished, Mr. Estilette and Etienne Latreyte, a great friend of Mr. Valin, accompanied him to New Orleans where he received his money. Five thousand dollars at that time was some money believe me, and "Boy" had the foresight to place one half of the amount where it was going to serve him for years to come. He purchased his present home from Frank T. Howard, son of Charlie Howard of Lottery fame, paying as I recall it Twenty-five hundred dollars cash therefor. Mr. Valin was a devoted husband and father, a patriotic citizen, a staunch friend, a charitable neighbor. Peace to his ashes.
