Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com May 14, 2015, 1:48 pm St. Landry Clarion (Opelousas, La.) 1890-1921, August 13, 1921, Image 4 Mrs. Constance Martel, a pioneer resident of this parish, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ambroise Goudeau, at Mallet, on July 22, at the venerable age of 96 years. Born in the parish of St. Martin in 1825, the deceased married the late L. D. Verret in 1852, and established her residence in this parish, where she reared a family of nine children, five of whom died in early life. Her living children are C. D. Verret, Benjamin Verret, Mary, wife of Ambroise Goudeau, and Henry Verret. Mrs. Verret had twenty-four grandchildren and forty-four great grandchildren. The deceased was the sister of Eugene Martel, Balthazar Martel, and Amedee Martel, prominent figures in the political history of St. Landry parish, and an aunt of Sully Martel of Franklin. Always a staunch christian, Mrs. Verret was laid to rest on July 23, in the family cemetery at Mallet, with the rites of the Catholic church.
