Eunice's Chief Executive Expires After a Brief Illness. The death of Octave E. Vidrine, Mayor of Eunice, which occurred in that city on the morning of Wednesday, January 22, caused general regrets throughout the parish of St. Landry. Speaking of the sad occurrence, the Eunice news says: "The immediate cause of the Mayor's death was acute peritonotis together with a severe attack of the grip. Mr. Vidrine had been ill for some time, but feeling much improved he came down town Saturday to attend to business, and the exposure caused a relapse which resulted in his death. "The remains were taken to Ville Platte, the Mayor's old home and bearth-place, on the Texas Pacific train Thursday morning, where the funeral services were held at the Catholic church at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Father Chastel, followed by the interment at the Catholic cemetery at that place. The funeral was a most beautiful and impressive ceremony and was attended by a large concourse of the sorrowing relatives and their sympathizing friends. "The remains were escorted to the depot from the family residence by a large compnay of Eunice citizens headed by the Woodmen band, which very kindly volunteered its services as mark of respect to the deceased. "Of the immediate family the deceased leaves his wife and five children, three boys and two girls, the eldest about 14 years old, the youngest but a few months of age, to mourn his loss. Of his own immediate family the deceased leaves one brother here, our esteemed citizen and business man, Homer Vidrine, one brother at Lafayette and two brothers and four sisters at Ville Platte. The Vidrines constitute one of the oldest, best known and most highly respected families in this part of the state, and most of them are located near the old family home in the vicinty of Ville Platte. "The deceased removed to Eunice from Ville Platte about seven years ago, and for a long time was engaged as salesman in som of our leading mercantile establishments, and as a salesman had but few equals. About four years ago he engaged in business on his own account as a cotton buyer, and which was his occupation at the time of his death. "Mr. Vidrine was elected Mayor of Eunice last May, hence had served in that capacity less than a year. During his tenure of office nearly all public improvements of any note have been made in the city, and there has been some very appreciable betterment of streets and sidewalks especially. The principal improvement however, has been the building of the splendid waterworks system, now nearly completed, and which is owned by the city. "The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of all the people of Eunice in this hour of sorrow, and feel that the city has suffered much in losing the citizenship and public services of Mayor Vidrine."
