Edward F. Voorhies.
Died at his home in this city Friday, May 18, at 4:30 p. m., Edward F. 
Voorhies, aged 22 years, 9 months and 8 days. He was the eldest son of Clerk 
of Court E. G. Voorhies and a young man of splendid character. Early in life 
he showed a deeply religious spirit and following this natural inclination 
he determined to enter the priesthood of the Catholic church. In pursuance 
of this purpose he matriculated at the Benedictine college at Covington, La. 
Later he became a student at Spring Hill College, and from there went to
St. Stanislaus College, Macon, Ga. At this last place the dread disease 
which finally proved fatal, manifested itself and occasioned the sad call to 
the father to come and get his son that he might pass into the "Great 
Beyond" surrounded by those dearest and nearest to him. Not long before his 
death he took the final vows of the Society of Jesus before Father Mattern, 
of Grand Coteau.
Funeral services were held at St. John's Catholic church and were largely 
attended by friends and relatives. Father Mattern, who officiated assisted 
by a number of priests, paid a beautiful tribute to the worth of the 
deceased. The remains were taken to Grand Coteau for interment.
