The Opelousas Female Institute closed the school term last night, with modest exercises, there being no graduate this year. The Opelousas Female Institute forms an interesting part of the educational history of Opelousas. Many of the bright, cultured women of this parish and town owe all the education they possess to the O. F. I.- and when we say "all the education they possess" we do not mean it in a limited sense. Those who graduated from the O. S. I. have reason to feel proud of the fact. The institution was organized by its present head and owner, Mrs. M. M. Hayes, in 1871. It began in a modest way, and grew until it now occupies its present building, a large, well-appointed, commodious brick building, situated in the center of the city. Mrs. Hayes was born in Franklin, Tennessee, and attended the Soule Female College at Murfeesboro, and later graduated from The Tennessee Female College in 1851. During the war she taught in private schools. She was married to Capt. James Hayes in 1868. After her husband's death, which occurred in 1871, Mrs. Hayes opened school in Opelousas, the outgrowth of which is the Opelousas Female Institute. Mrs. Hayes is a cultured, high-toned lady, besides an educator of marked ability. Long may the O. F. I. flourish!
