He was born in St. Martin parish in 1837. He was reared in this parish and received a fair education in the schools of the place. At the age of seventeen he began farming, and at the age of nineteen married Miss Marie Dignaud, of St. Martin parish, daughter of Goesen Dignaud and Josephine Guilbeau, both natives of Louisiana. Mr. Benard has devoted his attention to planting, and has a good plantation, on which he raises cotton and corn.
