MARTINVILLE.--Mr. Bernard was born in St. Martin parish in 1821. He is the son of Francois and Constance (Leblanc) Bernard. Both were natives of St. Martin parish. Francois Bernard was a wealthy and influential planter and owned a large amount of land in the parish. The subject of this sketch received a good business education and began life as a planter, in which business he is still engaged. He now owns and operates a valuable plantation in St. Martin parish of four hundred acres of land. He is one of St. Martin's most successful planters. Mr. Bernard has been married five times, and is the father of nine children. He and family are members of the Catholic church.
