MARTINVILLE.--Dr. Jewell is a native of Louisiana, and was born in St. Landry parish January 16, 1839. He is the son of. John M. Jewell, who was a native of Kentucky, reared and educated there, but removed to Louisiana when quite a young man. He located in St. Landry where he married our subject's mother, Miss Clarissa Lewis, a native of this State and a member of one of the prominent families of St. Landry. The issue of this marriage was four children-two sons and two daughters. John M. Jewell was killed in 1845 in a duel fought with a man by the name of Marshal. The subject of this sketch left his parental roof at the age of about seventeen and entered the Centenary College. He afterward studied medicine in the Medical College of New Orleans, Louisiana, from which institution he graduated with high honors in 1860. Upon the completion of his course in medicine he began to practise [sic] his profession in St. Bernard, Louisiana, but not being satisfied with the location he removed after a few months to New Orleans, where he practised for eleven years. Tiring of his arduous professional duties, he removed from the city and gave his attention to agricultural pursuits for two years. Not being as successful as he anticipated, he removed to New Iberia, where he resumed the practice of his profession. Twelve years later he removed to St. Martin parish, locating in the town of St. Martinville, where he now resides and practices his profession. The Doctor has been thrice married, his last wife being Mrs. Corinne Fournet, a native of St. Martin Parish. Dr. Jewell is a gentleman of fine literary attainments and superior professional ability. He has had a large amount of experience in his profession and enjoys the confidence and esteem of those with whom he has cast his lot.
