At the request of Marie Dugas, widow of Pierre Richard, Judge Seth Lewis went to the home of the deceased to inventory the community property. He named as appraisers Alexandra Declouet and Marin Martin. Done in the presence of Jean Charles Dugas, Fabien Richard, Louis Richard, and Ursin Hebert. LAND: a farm 6 arpents wide and 82 arpents deep on the west side of Bayou Vermilion, with improvements, appraised for $2,500. The undivided one- half interest in a tract of land having 20 arpents width by 40 arpents depth, located on the Prairie Fauquetaique in Opelousas County, at the place called Little Lake, appraised for $200. Also inventoried was a cotton gin, appraised at $800. The crops of cotton and corn (in the field) were appraised at $600. SLAVES: Etienne (20), appraised at $800; Eugene (20), at $700; Eulalie (21) and her 3 sons, Jean, Narcisse, and Baptiste, appraised together at $1,100. Community property appraised for $7,780.50. ADVERTISEMENT. This succession contains a good example of the advertisement for a succession sale. FAMILY MEETING, undated. A family meeting, composed of the following individuals was called to decide what disposition should be made of the estate of Pierre Richard. Present were Marie Dugas, Widow Pierre Richard; Michel Richard, son the deceased; Moyese Hebert, husband of Eliza Richard; and Ursin Hebert, husband of Marguerite Richard. Eliza and Marguerite Richard being daughters of the deceased. Also present were Pierre, Louis, and Fabien Richard, brothers of the deceased, and Jean Charles Dugas, brother of the widow. Family meeting unanimously decided that the estate be disposed of through a public auction. SALE: Buyers were Andre Martin, Ursin Hebert, Anaclet Richard, Benjamin Biles, Olivier P. Brain, John B. Cormier, Moyese Hebert, Saville Richard, Martin Constantine, Robert Bell, John Tiffany, Charles Brain, Widow Richard, John Murphy, Louis Arceneau, Marin Martin, Louis Richard, Pierre Jolin, Benajer Spell, Jean Melanson, Pierre Dugas, Glaude Broussard, Michel Martin, Jean F. Broussard, Jean Duhamel, Simon Benoit, Olivier Landry, Jr., Jerome Gotreau, Jean Bernard, Joseph Sonnier, Lufroy Sonnier, Joseph Dugas, John Andrus, Pierre Dugas, Jr. LAND: The homeplace was sold to Widow Richard for $3,325. The undivided one-half interest in 20 arpents of land sold to Anaclet Hebert for $70. The cotton gin was sold to David Guidry for $620. TUTORSHIP AND CURATORSHIP, November 10, 1811. Marie Dugas, Widow Pierre Richard, stated that her children were Louis Richard (16), Philippe Richard (13), Anaclet Richard (23), Marguerite Richard (22), wife of Ursin Hebert, Marie Louise Richard (21), wife of Moise Hebert, and Angelle Richard (20). Widow Richard declared that she accepted tutorship of Philippe. Louis Richard named Moise Hebert to be his curator. PARTITION, October 22, 1814. The community owed debts to Judge Lewis, Anaclet Richard, Andre Martin, Marguerite Dugas, Ursin Hebert, Jean Charles Hebert, Moise Hebert, Jean Dugas, Dr. Smith, Joseph Guidry, Michel Meaux, Gregoire Semere, Marguerite Granger, Alexandre Leger, Isabel Aucoin, Louis Chemin, Joseph Faulk, V. Richard, Cirile Richard, Louis Lingois, and Pierre Meaux, amounting to $599. The community property netted $8,199.60. One-half, or $4,098.80, belonged to the widow. The other half was divided equally among her children, each child receiving $683.14.
