December 20, 1873 SHOT DEAD.-At Breaux Bridge, on Sunday last, did this little scene occur. From all the details we have been able to obtain, the affair was brought about in this wize: A Mr. Chs. Guilbeau, who entertained a political opinion directly in opposition to the one entertained by Mr. Veazey, the present clerk of the court in the parish of St. Martin, had set up for himself a standard of society in which he did not propose to have Mr. Veazey enter, and the result proves that Mr. Guilbeau stuck to his decision. A ball was given somewhere in their neighborhood, by a gentleman not quite so fastidious in his choice of company, and these gentlemen were both invited to attend. They did so. But when Guilbeau perceived that he had fallen into the company of this office holder, the man for whom he entertained such peculiar contempt, he immediately withdrew himself from the spot. The next morning (Sunday) they both met in Breaux Bridge, and Mr. Veazey, who did not like the distinction shown him, said to Mr. Guilbeau, "Are you the man who left the ball last night because I was present!" The reply was in the affirmative, and without much ceremony Mr. Guilbeau was shot, the ball taking effect between the eyes, causing instant death. -Sugar Bowl.
