(St. Martinsville [i.e.St. Martinville]La.) 1886-1948, February 29, 1896, Image 5 Alphonse Bienvenu Dead. About fifteen days ago Mr. Alphonse Bienvenu left here for New Orleans, accompanied by his son, Felix for the purpose of having an operation performed on his eyes, which operation was made last week at the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat hospital. The operation is said to have been very successful, and Mr. Bienvenu remained in that institution to follow the treatment that was necessary after such a delicate operation. Tuesday night, in some unaccountable manner, Mr. Bienvenu fell from the Balcony of the third story of the senses hospital, and was found on the sidewalk in an unconscious condition; he was immediately removed to the Charity Hospital, where he died half and hour later, without having recovered consciousness. Mr. Bienvenu's body was identified soon after his death and having many friends and relatives in the city, his body was immediately removed to the residence of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Victor Baudier. On learning of this unfartunate (sic) accident, his son Felix Bienvenu left for New Orleans to bring his father's remains home, and arrived here by the evening train Thursday. The remains were brought to the residence of his daughter, Mrs. B. L. Durand, where they were viewed by his large family and friends. The funeral took place at half past four o'clock and was very largely attended; deceased being a veteran fireman, the fire department attended his funeral and his body was borne to the grave on the truck of Vigilant Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1, and his brother firemen acted as pall-bearers. Mr. Bienvenu was aged 75 years and spent all of his life in this town, he was an honorable gentleman and had the esteem and respect of the entire community. May he rest in peace.
