Wednesday evening the 15th inst., at 5 o'clock, Mrs. Felix Voorhies, borne (sic) Modeste Potier, died at the home of her husband, in New Iberia, at the age of 57 years and 4 months. Mrs. Voorhies had been sick for several months, and her death was not unexpected, but her noble character, her kind despositions (sic) had drawn around her a host of friends who esteemed and loved her and who daily inquired about her condition, and expressed their sympathies for her and her family, for they all knew the void that would be made in the home after her death. Mrs. Voorhies was buried in St. Martinville, at five o'clock Thursday evening, and her remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. 2nd. Obituary; source: New Iberia Enterprise. (New Iberia, La.) 1885-1902, May 18, 1901, Image 2 DEATH OF MRS. FELIX VOORHIES, Mrs. Felix Voorhies, nee Modeste Potier, aged 57 years and four months wife of Judge Felix Voorhies, died at her home, after a protracted illness of several months, on Wednesday evening, May 15th, at five o'clock. The funeral service was held at St. Peters church, this city, at 2:30 P. M., in the presence of a large and notable assemblage who came to pay tribute to the memory of the worthy dead. After the sad ceremony her remains were carried to St. Martinville, and placed in the family vault. It can well be said by those who loved her, that we miss the noble, kind, and christian wife and mother. She was a shining ornament, sacrificing all on the altar of motherly duty to those she loved. The vacant place in the household leaves a void that can never be filled, still it is a consoltion to know that her example will live forever. This departed mother has lived a most upright and edifying and beautiful life, leaving her home a sanctuary of blessesness. "Tis truly said "God loves a shining mark." God said unto Abraham, "Walk thou in my presence and be perfect." It was in the presence of God that this good lady walked continually, and worshipped no other but the living God, to guide her daily steps. May God who doth all things well, in his influite wisdom and mercy pour the soothing balm of consolation into the aching hearts of the devoted family bereft of her presence. A most beautiful and sad ceremony of the burial of this devoted mother was that she was carried to her last resting place by six of her loving sons, muttering prayers for the repose of her departed soul. We pray that she has already received her reward and woke up in the eternal bestitude of heavenly bliss. And after the motherly blessings to the dear ones left behind may they too walk in the presence of their God and Master, that when the final summons comes they will be prepared to mmet her and glorify their God, and her God, who art in heaven.
