The head of household is listed in the far left column, followed by a tally chart enumerating the free white males, free white females, number of slaves, etc.The list below is a list of the heads of household and does not contain the tallied individuals found in the record. Misspellings either by myself or the original census taker no doubt exist so if you do not find your last name immediately, search for it with variations on the spelling. There were a total of 2,909 people living in St. Mary Parish in 1820. Of this number, 1,017 were white men and women and 107 were free blacks. The largest group in the parish by far were the slaves, who numbered 1,757 - nearly double that of the white population. St. Mary Parish's white population made up just thirty-five percent of the total. Sixty percent of the parish's residents were slaves, and about four percent were free blacks. There were twenty-eight persons who were not United States citizens. When asked whether they were engaged in the business of agriculture, commerce or manufacturing, more than eighty percent of the parish residents earned their living from agriculture. Thirteen percent of residents worked in manufacturing- related jobs, and only five percent were merchants or in the business of commerce. An interesting demographic existed with regard to gender in the parish. While both the free black and slave populations reflected an almost equal number of males and females, the white population did not. Of the 1,017 white residents, 602 were men and 415 were women - a 60/40 split versus the normal 50/50. Page 1 G.W. King H.
