Christine Maas Phipps, 40, a native of Australia and resident of Thibodaux, died of melanoma on Monday, June 11, 2007 at 8:27 p.m. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 1621 Main Street in Patterson, at 4 p.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2007. Christine is survived by her husband, Scott; son, Sean; daughter, Heather of Thibodaux; parents, Jim and Iris Maas; sister, Joanne and husband, Gary; nephews, Jacob and Michael Heidenreich; brother, Timothy and wife, Lynda; nieces, Gabrielle and Hayley Maas, all of Queensland, Australia. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Walter and Rosa Muckert and Wilhelm and Rosalyn Maas, also from Queensland, Australia. During her teaching career, Christine traveled extensively, teaching in Queensland, Papua, New Guinea, the U.S. territory of Guam, as well as in the Louisiana towns of Franklin, Baldwin and Patterson. She enjoyed bringing out the best in all her students. "We get knocked down, but we get up again, and keep going. Through suffering, these bodies of ours constantly share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies."
