The son of the late Tony George Kountoupis of Ikaria, Greece, and the late Marika Karellas of Sparta, Greece, he was born August 5, 1929, in Dewey, Okla., and baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church the same year. Dr. Kountoupis held degrees from the University of Oklahoma, the University of Tennessee Medical School, by the American College of Radiology and was licensed in California, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. He was recognized for 50 years of service to the medical profession in May 2009. He served in the U. S. Army and Army Reserve for six years following high school graduation. Dr. Kountoupis was married to the former Judith Ann Byrnes of New Orleans, and together they had three sons, George Dimitrios, Antonios Dimitrios and Christopher Dimitrios Kountoupis. They made their home in Morgan City for 27 years before moving to Lafayette and eventually to Austin, Texas, to retire and be with their family. Jim Kountoupis was the consummate father and husband, guiding his sons into manhood by example and always, always loving his wife. He was a humble gentleman who loved deeply and forgave freely. Those who knew him best will remember Jim's quick wit and mischievous smile. He loved OU football, Errol Garner's "Misty," good conversation about the universe or politics, his Greek heritage and sharing a fine meal and a good glass of wine with friends and family. Dr. Kountoupis is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Judith; his devoted sons, George, Tony, and Chris and his wife, Aislynn; and two beautiful grandchildren, Aidan James and Clara Josephine, all of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by one brother, Perry Kountoupis of San Jose, Costa Rica. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to a favorite charity. The funeral service will be conducted at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1200 Robert E. Lee Blvd., New Orleans on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at noon with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. The Rev. Fr. Anthony Stratis will officiate. Interment at Lake Lawn Park will take place immediately following the funeral service. ===================
