David Joseph McCoy Sr., age 85, of Houston Texas, died at his home on April 22, 2011 with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on January 2, 1926, in the town of Franklin, Louisiana to the late Fredrick and Sedonia Hall McCoy. He attended grade school in Franklin, Louisiana. David served in the United States Navy and performed his military duties in New Orleans; Wilmington, West Virginia; Norfolk, Virginia; Great Lakes, Illinois; Karachi, India and Paris, France. He was stationed on the USS General Harry Taylor AP 145 ship out of Brooklyn, New York. On March 12, 1975 he was united in marriage to Gladys Moore in Houston, Texas, David was baptized at an early age at Asbury United Methodist Church in Franklin, Louisiana. He later joined the Greater St. Mathews Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Gusta Booker where he served as a finance officer and deacon. He worked for many years with Fingers Corp., J.T. Thorpe, Kyle & Taylor Co. and Houston Independent School District. David is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 35 years, Gladys McCoy; five sons, David Joseph McCoy Jr. (Rose) of Franklin; Frederick Segura (Jackie); Darrin McCoy (Rhonda); Don Rivers and Freddie Moore Sr. (Paula), all of Houston, Texas; eight daughters, Sedonia McCoy Ina (Raymond) and Jannie McCoy of Franklin; Mildred Walker (Oliver) and Sheila Rankins (Louis) of New Iberia; Darlene Brown (Melvin), Diane Rivers, Cassandra Segura (Jarvis) and Rachel McCoy, all of Houston; 40 grandchildren; 59 great grandchildren; five great- great grandchildren; four godchildren, Frances Chark, Tremon Finley and Tamara Finley; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Frederick McCoy; sisters, Helen McCoy Brooks, Annie Mae McCoy Brown, Rose McCoy Wilson, Jennie McCoy Robinson and Vivian McCoy Prevost Tolds; sons, Frederick McCoy and Dennis Batiste; one grandson, Ralph Ledet; one granddaughter; and one godchild, Lisa Moore. Visitations will be observed Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Greater St. Mathews Baptist Church located at 14919 Main Street Houston, Texas 77033. Burial rites will be read Saturday, at 11 a.m., at that church, with the Rev. Gusta Booker officiating. Interment will follow in the Houston Memorial Gardens.
