DOEGA, PHILIP 
January 6, 1921 - May 6, 2011 

Philip Doega, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-
law and friend, passed away peacefully from this world on May 6, 2011. 

The only son of four children, he was born on Jan. 6, 1921, in Basile to Joseph 
"Nickel" and Ella Doega.
Philip was married to Ruby Lantz Doega on June 15, 1941.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruby; his parents; and three 
sisters, Ethel Bertrand and husband Adam, Hazel Granger and husband Sidney, and 
Joyce Twozin and husband Paul.

Philip is survived by his daughter, Peggy Doega Jennings and husband Don; his 
sons, Sherril Doega and Roslyn, and Gerald Doega and wife Sharon; his grandsons, 
Remy Doega and Tracy, and Cade Doega and wife Kelly; his granddaughter, Daphney 
Wallake; his great-grandchildren, Nathan Wallake and Katy Wallake; daughter-in-
law, Boogie Doega; extended family and numerous and loving friends.

Philip served proudly in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in 
the China-Burma-India Theater, and for his service he was awarded the 
Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He enjoyed sharing stories about 
his years in the armed forces and displaying his medals.

Following the military service, he was employed with Shell Oil until his 
retirement in 1981. Philip enjoyed attending the Shell retirement lunches over 
the years to catch up with his old friends and co-workers. He was also a past 
member of both the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

Philip and Ruby resided in Bayou Vista, and they loved to go camping in their 
travel trailer. Family was everything to them, and they would spend many of 
their weekends visiting with family and friends. Philip had strong faith and 
never missed church services. Birthdays, anniversaries and holidays were always 
remembered with cards or calls if he didn't pay a special visit or send big 
bouquets of red roses.

Before and after retirement, Philip spent many happy years on his hobby of 
building things for the pleasure of it including carrying cases, porch swings, 
folding chairs and pirogues. He was quite the handyman who could fix just about 
anything around the house and lived independently until the age of 87 years. 
Philip liked working a small vegetable garden from time to time, keeping the 
yard looking its best; or watching the world from his back porch swing. Philip 
loved to watch the Braves and any and all football was his favorite. He 
appreciated his life; he loved his family and stayed active in their lives.

Philip will be remembered as a wise and quiet man with a kind soul who overcame 
the adversities in his life through his personal strength and resilience. He had 
a kind word for all and we were blessed to have him in our lives for so many 
years. Toward the end of his life's journey, Philip was lovingly cared for in 
his home by some remarkable ladies who brought much joy and happiness to his 
life. Special thanks go to these exceptional caregivers.

The family is eternally grateful for their care, companionship and compassion.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 
2011, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile with Father Brian Taylor as 
celebrant. Entombment will follow in the St. Augustine Mausoleum alongside the 
love of his life, his wife Ruby.

The family will receive friends for visitation and remembrance at Ardoin's 
Funeral Home in Basile today, Monday, May 9, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again 
on Tuesday, May 10, from 8 a.m. until time of services. Father Brian will recite 
a Rosary at 6 p.m. Monday evening.

Ardoin's Funeral Home of Basile is in charge of arrangements.
