After the death of her father when she was seven months old, she and her mother moved across Bayou Teche to the home of her grandparents, Jules and Orala Stout Falterman. She was to remain in their home until her marriage to Severin C. Melancon on September 24, 1944 . She and her husband made their home in Franklin after his discharge from the Air Force. He had a small business servicing filling stations equipment for about six years. After that period he went to work for the Texaco Oil Company where he remained until his death in January 15, 1958 . Marian graduated from Franklin High School in 1936 and U.S.L. in 1944. She taught school for 50 years, her first assignment in 1939 was Bayou Chene in the middle of the Atchafalaya Basin, then came Glencoe in St. Mary Parish. After three years she found herself back to her high school to teach second grade. She was to remain there until 1959. With her son James, she traveled to Alaska for two years to teach, first to Sitka and then to Ketchikan. She came back in 1961, where she returned to Franklin High ( Crowell School ), from there to Centerville High, Foster Elementary, LaGrange Elementary, Crowell Elementary, and finally St. John for 17 years before retiring in 1989. From 1966-1970 and 1978-1982, she served on the Franklin City Council. After 1982, she worked for the City of Franklin on several jobs or projects, like Tourist Director, Beautification projects, Cemetery Survey (This job culminating in the printing of the Franklin Cemetery Book). Marian belonged to the Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, Landmarks, AARP, Golden Age, and several educators associations. She is survived by her son, Jim 'Snowball' Melancon and his wife, Debbie Robichaux; her grandchildren, James Melancon, and LaClaire Melancon Achee and her husband, Chris Achee; her three great grandchildren, Ethan Melancon, Caitlin Achee, and Lauren Achee. Marian was almost consumed with her love for her family, this love for children especially, flowed on to all the children she taught and also to the children who surrounded her when she was on playground duty. Laughingly, she would reminisce, telling delightful little things the children would tell her. One she enjoyed telling was of the little boy who had moved from Abbeville. He had a very French background, so those of you who are of French heritage will enjoy it most. One day when Marian was on duty, the boy ran to her and said "Mrs. Melancon, they are talking on my back in front of me!" Her reply, "Don't worry about that- you should start worrying when they begin talking on your back in the back of you." She enjoyed meeting former students and reminiscing about their second grade year. She would make them smile with the memory of where they sat in the class room or something that once happened. Mrs. Marian passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the Lafayette General Medical Center after complications arose from a fall. She was 93 years old, having lived a full life filled with loving family and friends. The family of Marian requests that visitation be observed Wednesday, July 27, 2011 from 10am until time of services at the Church of the Assumption in Franklin with a rosary being prayed at 1:30pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, July 27th at 2pm at the Church of the Assumption in Franklin with Father Billy Ruskoski officiating. Burial will follow in the Franklin Cemetery. ===================
