Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/stmary/obits/dateobits/2011/sm1108.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Assumption for Margaret Achee, 93, who passed away Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 8:50 AM at Iberia Medical Center in New Iberia. Burial will follow in the Franklin Cemetery. Father Lloyd Benoit will officiate the services. Margaret was the only child of Arthur A. Achee and Lena George Achee. She was born in Jeanerette and moved to Franklin at two years of age. A 1936 graduate of St. John Academy, she entered the work force in 1938 as a stenographer for the Department of Public Welfare. She was a veteran of the United States Air Corps (WAC) having served during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following the military, she continued her studies at LSU and received her BS Degree in 1949. She came back to Franklin and was employed by Sterling Sugars, Inc. as Secretary to the CEO and Assistant Secretary of the Company, where she dedicated 34 years of faithful service, until her retirement in 1983. She served as President of Unit 63, of the American Legion Auxiliary. Margaret was also a very devoted member of the Church of the Assumption Catholic Church in Franklin, where she served as President of the Ladies Altar Society. She was selected as FranklinÕs ÒWoman of the YearÓ in 1959, served as Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Assumption No. 1672, was selected as ÒDaughter of the YearÓ in 1966, and was Chairman of the Church Ministries Committee. She also acted as Church Parish Correspondent for the Diocese of Lafayette newspaper and handled many local church parish news releases for a number of years. In 1966, she received the BishopÕs Medal for Devoted Service. She also served her church as a Lay Minister of Holy Communion. In this capacity she served at Mass and brought Holy Communion to a number of shut-ins. She was an active member of her Come Lord Jesus study group. In March of 1991 she was selected as First Commercial BankÕs Citizen of the Quarter. Survivors include numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur A. Achee and Lena George Achee. A gathering of family and friends will be held Tuesday, August 16, at the Church of the Assumption from 9:00 AM until Mass time, with the rosary and prayer service being held at 10:00 AM.
