Burial in the Perpetual Park Cemetery. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. . . II Corinthians 5:8 Dignity, courage, faith-filled, strength, Pastor, preacher, teacher, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and community leader, are all words that describe Pastor Clarence Stewart, Sr. Clarence was born on July 30, 1945, to the late Edward “Baby” Stewart and the late Elnora Pickett Stewart, the ninth of eleven children. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Rev. Octave Vincent at Triumph Baptist Church. He served there as a deacon under Rev. Vincent’s leadership and later as Senior Deacon under the leadership of the late Rev. Walter Moore. After many years of faithful service, he accepted his call into ministry to preach the word of God. He was ordained in 1984 and served as the pastor of Triumph Baptist Church for the past 18 years. A man of humble beginnings, Clarence graduated from Willow Street High School in 1963 and began his career as a Sanitation worker for the City of Franklin. Diligent and consistent with a strong work ethic, Clarence moved to the Sewer Department and eventually to the Line Department. He was mentored by the late Andee Ibert and was thankful to him for many years of guidance, direction, and the apprenticeship opportunities he provided. Lionel Uze and the late Raymond Goulas also mentored him and were instrumental in further developing his natural talents as an Electrician. After being employed by the City of Franklin for 16 years, Clarence took a position with Trunkline Gas Company in 1979. He began his career there as a maintenance man, was promoted to Operator, and ultimately, to Control Technician. This role afforded him opportunities to travel and advance educationally as he perfected his craft. A reduction in the Trunkline Gas workforce in 1991 led to Clarence being laid off and served as a precursor to his return as an employee of the City of Franklin. Teche Electric Co-op hired him in 1993 as a lineman and in May 1993, he returned to work for the City he loved as Electrician and City Inspector. In this role, he maintained, supervised, and oversaw the operations of the city’s electrical facilities for 17 years, and with a combined 30 years under his belt, he retired July 30, 2010 from the City of Franklin.
