Mrs. Reed was born Sept. 29, 1914, to Aimee (Soileau) and Alcidus Vidrine in Grand Prairie. She was preceded in death by dear parents, her beloved husband of 63 years, Oscar Reed; three brothers, Howard Vidrine, Allen “Cooz” Vidrine and Bruce Vidrine. Left to mourn her passing are seven children, Dr. Dale Reed and his wife Theresa of Ville Platte, Kenneth Reed and his wife DeeDee of Abilene, Texas, Oscar Reed Jr. and his wife Rosie of Lafayette, Dr. Don Reed and his wife Elaine, also of Lafayette, Andrew Reed and his wife Karen of Morgan City, Ron Reed and his companion Gayle Prejean of Carencro, and Jan R. Foret and her husband Charlie of Arnaudville; and her brother, J.B. Vidrine and his wife Annie. Her memory will most certainly be cherished by her 19 grandchildren, 26 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mabel graduated from high school in Grand Prairie. She attended the former SLI, where she earned a teacher’s certificate. She taught first and second grades, where she instilled a love of learning in many young children as they began their school years. She then went on to retire from the classroom after teaching in St. Landry and Evangeline parishes for 35 years. Mabel and Oscar raised their family in Basile, where they lived for 30 years. Mrs. Reed was an active member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church community, where she was a valued member of the Ladies’ Altar Society. Upon their retirement, Mabel and Oscar moved to Ville Platte, where they continued their service to others by visiting patients weekly at the local hospital for five years. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish. Mabel’s faith was an important part of her life; she enriched her faith by participating in Bible study classes and enjoying a beautiful deep prayer life. Her family was the very center of “Mom’s” life; she was happiest when she was with her husband, children and, of course, her grandchildren. No one can duplicate her wonderful fudge, which was a favorite of the entire family. How she loved to see her family enjoying her special homemade treats. Mom’s devotion to her family and faith will serve as a powerful example for all those lives that she touched. Pallbearers will be her grandsons “Bubba” Reed, Chuck Reed, Jay Foret, Ben Reed, Mike Reed and Dr. Ashton Reed. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons Danny Reed, Jason Reed, Max Reed and Adam Reed. Lectors will be granddaughters Susan Holden and Mary McShan. Gift bearers will be granddaughters Sister Malia Grace Reed, Sally Saloom, Myra Sanchez, Shelley Stelly, Amy Thorguson, Rachel Wagenspack and Christina Comeaux. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the entire staff of Hospice of Louisiana for their competent and loving care. We would also like to especially thank the following caregivers: Martha, Camelia, Cathy, Harriet, Bertha, Ellen and Gertha. Their loving care and gentle hands meant so much to Mom and her family during her last days. In lieu of flowers, the Reed family requests a contribution in Mabel’s name to a charity of your choice. Ardoin’s Funeral Home, 709 West Main St., Ville Platte, has been entrusted with all arrangements ===================
