Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/stmary/obits/dateobits/2013/sm1303.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at 11 AM at Ibert's Mortuary in Franklin for Mr. Jay C. "Slim" Shugart, II, 90, a native of Burkburnett, TX, former resident of Baldwin and Picayune, MS, and a resident of Morgan City for the past several years, who passed away Friday, March 1, 2013, at 9:00 PM at Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City. Burial will follow in the Franklin Cemetery. Reverend Father Gregory P. Fratt, of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City, will officiate the services. Jay was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served as a Seaman First Class on the USS Mount Olympus, a Mount McKinley-class amphibious force command ship, designed as an amphibious force flagship, a floating command post with advanced communications equipment and extensive combat information spaces to be used by the amphibious forces commander and landing force commander during large-scale operations. The USS Mount Olympus was part of many invasions and liberations. Jay was very proud that their ship never lost one life. Just prior to being honorably discharged from the Navy, he married the love of his life, Ava B. Newton. Jay worked in the oil industry. Working for several oil companies during his career, he drilled wells for 50 years. He also owned and operated for a brief time Slim's Service Station in Franklin, which was located on the corner of Main and Adams. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and will be truly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his six children, James M. Shugart and his wife Judy of Biloxi, MS, Steven Lee Shugart and his wife Dianna of Cumming, GA, Katherine S. Callais and her husband Larry of Berwick, Charles Glenn Shugart and his wife Kyle of Canton, GA, Jay C. Shugart, III and his wife Theresa of Hattiesburg, MS, and Deborah S. Shannon and her husband Wade of Sugar Hill, GA; as well as 18 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ava B. Newton Shugart; one grandson, Joshua S. Shugart; his parents, Jay C. Shugart and Nettie Mae Hurt Shugart; two brothers, Damon Lee Shugart and Rupert Shugart; and one sister, Adeal S. Brown. A gathering of family and friends will be held Tuesday at Ibert's Mortuary from 8:00 AM until time of service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Mr. Jay's memory to The American Cancer Society, The family would like to express their deepest heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Maison Jardin, the staff of Teche Regional Medical Center, Dr. Maryellon and Bill Allen, and Dr. Juan Escarfuller, for their compassion and loving care given to their father.
