Mae Dean Rogers Simpson passed away at her home in Williamston, N.C., Tuesday, 
May 21, 2013, surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held in her 
honor at Pharr Chapel United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at 2 
p.m. with the Rev. John Locascio officiating.

Mae Dean was a resident of Morgan City for more than 35 years, having raised 
her family here. She is survived by her husband, Jack Simpson of Williamston, 
N.C.; her daughters, Cheryl Simpson of Chicago and Michele (Wilson) Jones of 
Williamston, N.C.; her sons, Ray (Valerie) Coltrain of Hertford, N.C., and Jack 
Simpson of Abbeville; sisters, Marie Whitehurst of Washington, N.C., Ruth 
(Gary) Hunt of Jacksonville, Fla., and Dot (Roger Lee) Conner of Williamston, 
N.C.; brothers, James (Jean) Rogers of Tarboro, N.C., and Daniel (Bonnie) 
Rogers of Goldsboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 
her Morgan City bowling family.

Mae Dean was an avid bowler. She served on the local Women’s Bowling 
Association board as both director and president for many years, as well as 
serving on the Louisiana State WBA as director for several years. She was a 
pioneer in women bowling on the men’s leagues, thus changing the game locally. 
She also was a dedicated supporter of youth bowling, both teaching and 
encouraging all willing to accept her assistance. Mae Dean still holds many 
bowling records including high game (300), high series (774) and high average 
(209). Even though she moved away in 2008, she is still remembered and missed 
by all the local bowlers she touched in so many ways.

She was a cancer survivor for several years and was a great supporter of the 
Relay for Life program. Her generosity was felt by many survivors through her 
letters and cards. She also gave support to those battling cancer by paying it 
forward by supplying wigs to those with conditions like hers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the MC Women’s Bowling 
Association to establish a Mae Dean Simpson Memorial Scholarship for deserving 
youth bowlers in this area.
