Funeral arrangements will be conducted for LeRoy J. Charpentier, 85, on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at 10 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with Father Greg Cormier officiating. Entombment will follow in St. John Mausoleum. Visitation will be on Friday, November 15, 2013, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., and resume on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at 8 a.m. until services. A rosary will be recited in the funeral home on Friday at 6:30 p.m. A resident of New Iberia and a longtime resident of Jeanerette, Mr. Charpentier passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at 2:36 p.m. upon arrival at a local hospital. Mr. Charpentier was an avid gardener all his life and made a large vegetable garden up until two years before his death. He generously shared his garden bounty with all his family and his neighbors and friends. He especially loved growing tomatoes and was known far and wide for his beautiful tomatoes. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the Louisiana National Guard, serving proudly for eight years as he was the main provider for his family and could not serve overseas. He worked many years in Franklin in the automotive parts business. He was a rural letter carrier with the U. S. Postal Service and retired with more than 30 years service. He enjoyed making his garden and listening to county music in his retirement. Mr. Charpentier was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charenton. He was the first person to serve as a lector in his church and continued to serve in this capacity for over 45 years, his illness made it too difficult for him to continue. He also served as Eucharistic minister for many years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louviere Charpentier of New Iberia; his sons, David Charpentier and his wife, Denise, of New Iberia; and Barry Charpentier and his wife, Angie, of Youngsville; his daughters, Jolene Holcombre of Berwick; Dana Tardiff and her husband, Rickey, of Opelousas; Susan Costa and her husband, Chris, of Patterson; Dawn Broussard and her husband, Jimmy; Nisa Smith and her husband, Mark; and Mary Glaubrecht and her husband, Richard, all of Jeanerette; his sisters, Margurerite Daigle, Betty Kern and her husband, Kenneth, and Earline Dupre all of Jeanerette; his brothers, J. C. Charpentier of New Iberia; Shanley Charpentier and his wife, Lota, of Baldwin; Hillary Charpentier and his wife, Rosemarie, of Franklin; Shelton Charpentier and his wife, Deanna, of Lafayette; and Marshall Charpentier of Victoria, Texas; 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elle Charpentier and Venida Bourque Charpentier. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Alzheimer’s Association.
