Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/stmary/obits/dateobits/2015/sm1503.htm and click on the name of interest. ========== Dolores Charles Henderson, 85, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and former resident and native of Morgan City, Louisiana passed away on Saturday March 14, 2015 at Clarity Hospice of Baton Rouge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at 6:05 PM. Visitation will be observed Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Camphor Memorial United Methodist Church 8742 Scenic Highway Baton Rouge, LA 70807 from 8:30 AM until 10:00 AM, with the Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. beginning at 10:00 AM. A Celebration of Life, celebrating the life of Mrs. Dolores C. Henderson, will begin at 11:00 AM with Reverend Clifton Conrad officiating the services. Entombment will follow on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 10:00 AM in the Morgan City Mausoleum in Morgan City, LA. A confidante, mentor, community servant, teacher, storyteller –these are but a few of the terms that describes a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. With compassion for others, her selfless spirit, and willingness to give freely of herself earned hr the love and respect of many. Dolores’s desire for and quest to acquire an education began with graduation from Morgan City Colored High School and later earning the Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Southern University at Baton Rouge in 1950. While at Southern University, she was initiated into the Beta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which began her long journey in dedicated service to the community. Eventually she earned the Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Southern Mississippi. After thirty-three years of unparalleled service to the St. Mary Parish School System as a Librarian, she retired to enjoy the fruits of her labor. After retirement, she remained active and expanded her avocation as “Toots” the storyteller. For sixty-five years, she was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., being a charter member of the Iota Eta Omega Chapter and an active member of the Tau Kappa Omega Chapter of the sorority. She was a life member of the Southern University Alumni Federation and committed member of the United Methodist Women and Sisters Supporting Sisters. Dolores also served on St. Mary Arts Council in Morgan City and created the Children’s Educational Enrichment Group to expose youth to the arts. She received many awards and recognitions throughout her lifetime. A few include the Blue Cross Angel Award, the Rotary Award, the What Manner of Man Award and the Ida B. Wells Award. Cherished and divine memories will forever be remembered by her daughter, Wanda Henderson of Baton Rouge, LA; two sons, Curtis Henderson of Silver Spring, MD and Kenneth Henderson (Carole) of Folsom, CA; two sisters; Margaret Gibson of Morgan City, LA and Idell O’Prien of Gray, LA; five grandchildren, Shawn Guidry (Fleshanne) of Patterson, LA, Caleb Henderson of New York, NY, Charley Handy, IV of Plaquemine, LA, Shoirdae Henderson of Atlanta, GA, and Tamara Kirksey of Port of Spain,Trinidad; as well as several other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mrs. Henderson was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Charles and Bertha Hills and her husband, Caleb Henderson. ===================
