Savage, a native of Youngstown, Ohio and long resident of Morgan City, passed away August 12, 2015 at the age of 88. An avid sportsman and gun enthusiast, he loved being outdoors, whether here in south Louisiana or in Texas, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Bill was a world traveler, venturing to exotic locales, including Germany, France, China, Libya, Egypt, and his latest excursion to Argentina for dove hunting and dancing the Tango. He valued his Polish heritage, finally making a trip to Poland in his early 80s. During his childhood, Bill loved seeing movies at his father's theatre and playing with his beloved dog, Skip. Bill started his college career at the age of 17 at the University of Kentucky, where he joined the ROTC. He was proud of his service in the ROTC and departed the university in order to serve his country in the European Theatre. He was a proud Army Veteran of World War II, rising to the rank of Tank Sergeant while serving during the German Occupation. After serving in Germany, Bill returned to his studies at Ohio State University, before transferring to Marquette University in Madison, Wisconsin, where he graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering. At Marquette, Bill was actively involved with the Sigma Phi Delta fraternity, serving various positions, such as Social Director. While living in the Sigma Phi Delta house, Bill developed a lifelong love of the culinary arts, becoming a self-proclaimed gourmet at the age of 22. After years of cold weather, Bill sought a warmer climate and moved south to Houston, where he began work in the oil and gas business. Bill was an outstanding businessman. Throughout his career, he founded and led many profitable businesses, including Savage Equipment Service, Power Products, Spanish Trail Arms, and the JJS Cattle Ranch in Texas. Bill was involved in his community, participating with local organizations, such as the Elk Lodge and Rotary Club. He also enjoyed spending time on the water in his boat, taking his family out on day-long excursions on the bayous and lakes surrounding Morgan City. Bill is survived by his former wife, Carrie Savage, and their children, Susan Thompson and husband James of Houston, Nancy Thompson of Boise, Idaho, Elaine Savage of Houston, Jenny Savage of Houston, James Savage of Houston, Pauline Robertson of Baton Rouge, and Cheryl Robertson of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by grandchildren Lauren Miller and husband Jason, Parker Thompson, Lily Thompson, H. Platt Thompson III, and Kimberly Hillyer, as well as his sisters Bette and husband James Dunn of Boardman, Ohio, Barbara Sudano of Niles, Ohio, and brother Robert Savage of Hiawassee, Georgia. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Louise Savage, son William Savage II, and grandson John Hillyer II. Bill is now engaged in important endeavors, likely enjoying a cigarette and a glass of single malt Scotch (one ice cube only). A gathering to honor the extraordinary life of our Bill will be held Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 10:30 AM at Hargrave Funeral Home at 1031 Victor II Boulevard, Morgan City, Louisiana 70380. A memorial will begin at 11:45 AM with full military honors, conducted by The East St. Mary Veterans Funeral Squad, with a funeral service to be held immediately thereafter. After the services, you are invited to stay to share memories of Bill at a catered gathering and a toast in his honor. Donations may be made to The East St. Mary Veterans Funeral Squad.
