Merchant Takes Fatal Dose of Carbolic Acid by Mistake. Special to The Times-Democrat. Jeanerette, Aug. 14. - Henry Meyer, a well-to-do merchant and highly respected citizen of this city, died at 7 o'clock this morning from the effects of a large glassful of carbolic acid, which he took by mistake for mineral water. From the facts gathered from other members of his family, it appears that on the table in his room were two bottles containing mineral water and carbolic acid. Both were labeled mineral water, and the fatal dose was taken from the bottle that had the acid, with the result as stated above. On discovering his mistake about a minute later, the unfortunate man hastened to a drug store, a block away, to secure aid from a doctor, but he died before medical assistance could reach him. The deceased was born at Alsace-Lorraine, and at the time of his death was thirty-two years old. The remains were taken to Franklin this afternoon for interment. The members of the local lodge of Odd Fellows, of which Mr. Meyer was a member, attended the funeral in a body. He leaves a wife and young baby only a week old.
