Age At Death: 0 Community: Covington Other Info: Passed away at St. Tammany Parish Hospital of complications following a stroke. He was a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army. He was a native of Jackson, MS and a resident of Covington for the past 23 years. "Bill" graduated from Central High School and Mississippi State University. Upon graduation, he received a regular army commission and spent 34 years in service to his country. Among his many postings were Military Attache' to Nepal and Army Attache' to Argentina. Both countries awarded him commendation metals and he was also awarded three Legion of Merit Metals from the United States. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a Rotarian, a lay reader at Christ Episcopal Church for 15 years, an avid hunter, fisherman and ham radio operator. In 1963, while stationed in Nepal, Col. Gresham, along with the late Father Marshall Moran, was the base radio contact for the first successful U.S. Mount Everest Expedition. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Juanita Dowdy Gresham; two daughters, Gail G. Hamlin and Catherine G. Homan; two sons-in-law, William J. Hamlin and Richard M. She was a native of Alexandria. She was a graduated from Simpson High School in May 1935 and received her Bachelors Degree from Louisiana College in 1958. In 1967, she received her Masters Degree from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches and continued to obtain her Masters plus 30 Graduate hours in 1974 from Northwestern University and LSU. She taught at Simpson High School and also substitute taught in the Rapides Parish School system. In 1953 she began her work at the Special Education Center and eventually retired as principal in 1980 after 26 1/2 years. She was a member of Loyalty Chapter Daughter of the American Revolution Regent (1992-1995) and Les Rapides Chapter Louisiana Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, charter member of La Riviere Rouge Chapter National Society Daughters of 1812, and past president of Thomas Overton Moore Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also a member of the LSUA Library, Historical Association of Central Louisiana, Retired Teachers of Rapides Parish, Retired Senior Volunteers Program, AARP, Past Worthy Matron of Electa Chapter #10, O.E.S., and member of the Airview Terrace Garden Club. She was also a charter member and Treasurer of MacArthur Drive United Methodist Church in Alexandria. She is survived by her three sons, Judge B. Dexter Ryland of Alexandria, Rhett R. Ryland of Baton Rouge and Covington and Rebel G. Ryland of Columbia; one daughter, Sonya Ryland Millican of Baton Rouge; 13 grandchildren and two great granddaughters.
