He has been a resident of the Covington/Mandeville area for 38 years. He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to the late Clarence G. and Leah H. Law and lived his growing up years in the southwestern town of Carnegie, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Lois Kaiser Law, daughters Kathryn DeLaitsch of Houston, Texas; Charlotte Villalba and husband Kevin of Doylestown, PA and Betsy Snyder and husband Glenn of San Rafael, CA. also a special cousin, Susan Pourciau and husband David of Baton Rouge. He was Grand John to six wonderful grandchildren, Beth San Miguel and husband Domingo of Baton Rouge, Mark DeLaitsch and wife Liz of Lincoln, RI, Lisa and Chad DeLaitsch of Houston, Tx. And Reid and Greydon Snyder of San Rafael, CA. Three great-grandchildren, Alaina, Alexis and Emma. A veteran of WW II, he served in the Marshall and Mariana Islands with the U. S. Navy, Seabees, 110th battalion. Graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1951 with a degree in Civil Engineering, he was always amazed that he finally graduated in 9 years after marriage and two children. Upon retiring from Chevron in 1986 after 35 years, he began a woodworking hobby. After a workshop had been built on his property, Lois was in shock that "tool toys" were a necessity. His signature comment was that he made terrible looking boards but great sawdust. His family continues to enjoy the furniture he made for them. He loved being teased that whatever Daddy made would withstand hurricane winds. One Christmas he built a Christmas tree from an 8' sheet of plywood. He hung large red wooden apples on it with gold painted names of each family member. It was a struggle to brace this in the yard, but he made sure it would not come down. As more apples were added for marriages and births, he had to add a smaller tree for the great grandchildren. He also enjoyed golf, traveling and a weekly outing to "dine" at Wendy's and then to WalMart with friend and neighbor, Jerry. He was a great story teller, usually embellishing the actual event in great detail. His family doesn't believe this ability was passed on to any of them. He loved the Lord, life, family and friends. He will be missed. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services on Monday, February 16, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, #1 N. Warriner Jr. of Slidell passed away Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at his residence. He was born Nov. 25, 1917, in New Orleans, the eldest son of Alfred Louis Warriner of New Orleans and Inez Serpas of Toca in St. Bernard Parrish. Al grew up in New Orleans and on the White Plantation in Bayou LaFourche. He graduated from the University of the South at Sewanee in Tennessee. He went on to get an advanced degree in mechanical engineering from Tulane University. Aviation always fascinated Al and, in many ways, he was a pioneer of aviation. He built and flew his first airplane (a glider) when only 14-years-old. At the outbreak of World War II, Al joined the Army Air Corps and piloted B-24 Bombers to North Africa. He is credited with saving the lives of all nine men aboard a C-47 when a propeller flew off and forced an emergency landing on a mountain in Alaska's Talkeetna Range in winter. Al skillfully piloted the plane to a crash landing and, after 18 days without rescue, hiked out with his navigator 40 miles to the Alaska Highway to save the crew. In the process, he lost several toes to frostbite, but all crew members survived. After the war, Al put his mechanical engineering skills to work in the marine construction business. While working in Pensacola, Fla., he met Dorothy Newton of Seattle. They married in 1947 and had a son, Gray Warriner, in 1949. Al worked as a diver on many marine construction projects in the area including the first tunnel under the Mobile River in Alabama, the Harvey Tunnel, the Sunshine Bridge and other deep diving projects. Al went on to found Underwater Services, Inc., out of New Orleans in the late 1950s, which became one of the largest independent diving services companies in the world. An innovator, Al devised new techniques and brought new technologies to the oil and marine construction businesses. Underwater Services traveled to offshore oil platforms in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Maracaibo in Venezuela, as well as the Gulf of Mexico and was the first company to bring portable recompression chambers to the offshore oilfield and diving businesses in the South. In the early days of the Space Age, Al headed diving teams that recovered missiles tested for the Air Force and built an experimental anti-submarine warfare listening station for the Navy in the waters off Bermuda. In 1959, Al married Rose Mickenheim of New Orleans. They had two sons, Kenneth and Allen Warriner, both of whom live in the Slidell area. Rose and Al would have been married 50 years this June. Al Warriner never gave up his love of flying and was a pilot and aircraft owner for most of his life. He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen, AOPA and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was well-known in the Slidell area and was often seen driving with his pet Yorkie "Winnie," on his lap. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services at 2 p.m. Thursday at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. W. (in Forest Lawn Cemetery) in Slidell. The Rev. Helen Marcussen will be officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until funeral time. Private family inurnment in Forest Lawn Mausoleum will be at a later date.
