She was the beloved wife of the late Lt. Colonel Thomas Webb Beavers, U.S.A.F. Ret.; mother of Thomas S. Beavers (Jane I. Beavers) of Ocean Springs, Miss., Carl T. Beavers (Debbie A. Beavers) of Metairie and Carol B. Conklin (Jim Conklin) of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughter of the late Thomas Sibila and Ali Taka- Aho Sibila; and sister of Thomas Sibila. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Patricia, Thomas, Michelle, Anthony and Michael Beavers, all of Metairie, and Cary Trochesset of Brooklyn, N.Y. Beavers was a native of Brooklyn and a resident of Slidell since 1975. Along with her late husband, she was a member of the Retired U.S. Air Force Officers Association. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geraldine Farve Lagman; four sons, Edgar Lagman, Eugene Lagman, Wayne Lagman and David Lagman; and two daughters, Sharon Adams and Patricia Hebert. He is also survived by brothers, Alfred Lagman and Louis Lagman; sister, Callie Mae Dufrene; 21 grandchildren, 26 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Lagman was a lifetime member of American Legion. He was a past commander of Post 288 and a member of Post 0374 of Slidell. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5174 and of St. Margaret Mary Church of Slidell. He served with the U.S. Army 962nd Air Engineer Squadron. Mary Ann was the daughter of Aline Freret Kasischke and the late Charles F. Kasischke Sr. She was survived by her husband A. Wesley Koon III, her daughters Rebecca K. Walker (Jody) and Melinda C. Koon; her mother Aline F. Kasischke, her siblings Charles F. Kasischke Jr. (Christine), Janet K. Cromer (David), Ben H. Kasischke, and James F. Kasischke. Mary Ann also leaves behind her precious grandchildren Catherine and Sydney Walker. In addition she is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of loving friends. Mary Ann was a graduate of St. Scholastica Academy, and received a B.A. and M.Ed. from Southeastern University. She retired as an educator of 33 years in both Jefferson and St. Tammany Parishes with her last 11 years as principal at Lyon Elementary School in Covington. She was active member in her community, involved in the Greater Covington Kiwanis Club, a HOSTS mentor at Lyon Elementary, Ozone Square Dance Club, St. Benedict's Catholic Church and their Food Ministry. She was an advocate and supporter of the arts. Melva was a gracious lady, a devoted mother, a loyal, spirited and forgiving wife; and in her later years, having earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from LSU in 1979, developed into a compassionate counselor. Her stories of 'the days of the dog kennel', teaching at Fifth Ward and the escapades at the Riverboat Tchefuncte could entertain one for hours. An avid gardener, she was also a co-founder of Covington's Town and Country Garden Club. Melva will be remembered for her easy laughter, sympathetic ears, selfless generosity, the love and devotion she had for her children and grandchildren and the surprising yet fearless independence which guided her through life. Borstad and a longtime resident of Fairhope, Ala., recently of Slidell, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010. He was born on April 6, 1912, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Nicholas A. and Marie Harholdt Borstad. His mother passed away in his infancy and his up-bringing was largely influenced by loving maternal aunts, uncle and grandfather in St. Paul, Minn. He put himself through college working as a surveyor for the Minnesota Highway Department. He was a 1936 graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul where he met and in 1938 married Dorathy Johnson. Together they raised two sons, Stephen Jr. of Spokane, Wash., and Thomas of Centennial, Colo. Following college graduation he joined the Travelers Insurance Company where he served for 36 years in underwriting, marketing, and management positions in St. Paul, Toledo, Ohio, Grand Rapids, Mich., South Bend, Ind., Omaha, Neb., and St. Louis, Mo., ultimately rising to an executive position as a regional director in the company's home office in Hartford, Conn. Following the passing of his wife and retirement from The Travelers, he married Edna Peterson of West Hartford, Conn., in 1978. The couple moved to Aiken, S.C., where Mr. Borstad was a successful real estate broker. In 1991 Mr. Borstad again retired and the couple relocated to Fairhope, Ala. A devout Episcopalian he became an ordained deacon and served as associate minister at St. Francis at the Point Episcopal Church in Point Clear, Ala., a position he held until recently. He is survived by his beloved wife Edna; his two sons; two grandchildren, Mark and Scott Borstad, both of San Francisco, Calif.; stepchildren Allan Peterson of Florida, Craig Peterson of Colorado, and Nancy Peterson Westfall of Louisiana; two stepgrandchildren, one great-grandchild, 13 stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A life long resident of Slidell, he attended Lake Castle North Private School, where he was a member of the chess club, beta club, Cub Scouts, and drama club. He was consistently on the honor roll. Thank you to the teachers, staff, and especially the principal for the support and love shown him throughout his life. Christopher was a member of several swim teams, including the Pinewood Porpoises and the Hurricanes swim teams. His accomplishments on these produced several records in his age group, and he was the 8-year-old regional champion in 2005. Thank you to his coaches for believing in him and delighting in his abilities. He played baseball with the St. John of the Cross Cardinals, a year-round team, from 2003 to 2005, and entered the World Series with them in 2005. He earned the Most Valuable Player honor on his birthday during a mud fest of a tournament. Thank you to the coaches and the team for keeping him in your hearts as you went on to greater victories. Christopher was a member of St. John of the Cross Church, where he made his First Communion and participated on the altar many times. Thank you to the members of the parish and especially Father Gil and Deacon Ricky for your unceasing prayers and hope. He had a tremendous group of friends through school and scouting who loved him and rallied around him unfalteringly. Thank you to them and their parents for their friendship. She was the beloved wife of the late John Joseph Krolak; mother of two daughters Deborah Krolak Diecidue and Janet Krolak Howard; daughter of the late Joe and Maggie Ethridge; and sister of Ann Allday and the late Owanna Boyette and Mary Dean. She is also survived by three grandchildren Brad Diecidue, Ashley Diecidue, and April Howard, and six great-grandchildren Brandon Jones, Lauren Jones, Missy Jones, Joseph Diecidue, Anthony Diecidue, and Nicholas Diecidue. She was a native of Union, Miss., and a resident of Slidell since 1957. She was, along with her husband John, owner of Slidell Bicycle Shop for 30 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Slidell, and a member of Eastern Star Lakeshore Chapter 59. She retired from Sears Roebuck and Co. in 2003. He was the son of the late Inez Estopinal McKnight and Frank E. McKnight, Sr., brother of the late Patrick A. McKnight and grandfather of the late Timothy Michael McKnight. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Bobbie) Prather McKnight; six sons, Kevin F. McKnight, Sr. and wife, Marilyn of Folsom; Brian McKnight and wife, Denise of Metairie; David W. McKnight and wife, Liz of Garland, Texas; Patrick N. McKnight, Sr. and wife, Karen; Douglas P. McKnight all of Covington; Frank E. McKnight, III and wife, Lacey of River Ridge; and one daughter, Beth McKnight Legett and husband, David of Mobile, Alabama; fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Carol McKnight Daigle and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. McKnight was 81 years old, born in New Orleans and resided in Covington since 1979. He was a graduate of Holy Cross High School and Loyola University. He also attended Loyola Law School. He served in the Navy and Merchant Marines at the end of World War II. He was a coordinator of Civil Defense in Jefferson Parish and served as an officer in the Auxiliary Police Program. In 1977 he was elected president of the Southeast Louisiana E.M.S. Council. Mr. McKnight was also elected Democratic Committeeman-At-Large during the Carter Administration. He taught CPR and first aid with the Red Cross, and taught Junior Achievement. Upon moving to Covington, he served as an officer with both the St. Tammany Parish Deputy Reserve and the Covington Police Reserve. He established a training school for Reserve Police. He was on the board of the St. Tammany parish Fair Association and served as President and Vice-President. He was a member of St. Peter Parish and Knights of Columbus. Dr. Bickers was the beloved husband of Mary Phelps Bickers; father of Joan Karen Bickers Dearing of Mandeville, LA, John Michael Bickers of North Palm Beach, FL, and David Nelson Bickers of White Plains, GA; son of the late Bessie Southard Bickers and Joseph W. Mims. He was born in Stokesdale, NC, grew up in White Plains, GA and has resided in Louisiana since 1957, most recently in Covington, LA at Christwood Retirement Community. Dr. Bickers was a 1950 graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens, and a 1954 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta. He served a one year internship at City Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was a Medical Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington, D.C. for two years, before beginning a residency in Internal Medicine at the Veterans Administration Hospital in New Orleans, LA. He remained on the staff at the V.A. Hospital, in the Chest Disease Section for one year, and then joined the faculty at the LSU Medical Center in New Orleans in 1961. There he founded the Department of Medicine, the Section of Hematology and Oncology, and was its Director for 30 years. He directed the construction of the Leukemia unit at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and was its Medical Director for 20 years. Dr. Bickers was also Director of the Medical Oncology Fellowship program for over 20 years. He conducted clinical research, directed mainly at improving treatment in patients with cancer and he was the author or co-author of over 40 publications. He attained the academic rank of Professor of Medicine and was certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. Dr. Bickers retired from the full time faculty in 1998, but continued to work on a part time basis until 2005. Dr. Bickers was a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Metairie, LA and belonged to many medical organizations. One in particular was the Southwest Oncology Group of which he was a member from 1965 to 1998. He was a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, and a member of The American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is survived by his beloved wife Julie Brennan Tolis; four children, Alexis Stone, her husband Bob Stone, Todd Tolis, his wife Karen Dixon Tolis, PatriciaTolis Snider, her husband Dustin Snider , Joseph Tolis and his wife Jenny Farley Tolis; a sister-in-law: Demetra Tolis, and five grandchildren: Adeline Tolis, Kadin and Kalyssa Tolis, Lauren and Tyler Snider. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alexandra Tolis, and a brother Peter Tolis. Mr. Tolis was born and raised in New Britain, Conn. He was an all-state player in high school and went on to play center at George Washington University. He was named to the All-Southern Conference Team before joining the U.S. Army, and serving his country in the Korean War. After the service, he played another two years at Central Connecticut. He started coaching in Florida, and went on to coach at East Carolina, Western Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee-Martin, and the University of Alabama, before becoming assistant and then head basketball coach at University of New Orleans from 1985 to 1989. He was a teacher in Jefferson Parish for 12 years and retired in 2008. He touched many people's lives and will forever be remembered for his huge heart and his beautiful charm and spirit. She was born in Bonfuca and was retired after 35 years of service with the St. Tammany Parish School Board office at Brock Elementary. She was one of the founding members of the Pentecost Baptist Church, which she served faithfully for 48 years. She was the wife of Raymond Ducre for 61 years; the mother of Marian (Samuel) Sams, Lester Ducre, LuVerta Ducre, Geraldine (Alfred) Winzy, Rosa Ree Ducre Miller, Ronnie Ducre and Thelmas (Thomas) Ducre-Jefferson. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene Brown Grieshaber; three sons, James Frederick (Aleen), Bruce George (Kathleen) and Robert John (Louise); eight grandchildren, Jimmy, Eric, Jill, Bruce, Scott, Keith, Emily and Glen; and five great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, Frederick Grieshaber and Margaret Cleary Grieshaber; one brother, Dr. Bernard Grieshaber; and one sister, Margaret Grieshaber Martin. He graduated from LSU School of Medicine in 1942 and immediately served in World War II. He practiced dermatology in private practice, was associate professor of dermatology at both LSU and Tulane Medical Schools and was a past president of the Louisiana State Dermatological Society. He served as the chief of dermatology at the V.A. Medical Center from 1966 until his retirement in 1981. He then joined his son in private practice in Covington. He enjoyed "trailoring," was a longtime member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club and served as past president of the Greater New Orleans Airstream Club. Tony was born June 17, 1969 in Augusta, Ga., and resided in Slidell since 1983. Tony was a graduate of Northshore High School in Slidell and attended Southeastern Louisiana University where he was a member of the KDT Fraternity. He was the beloved son of Marshall and Gloria Taylor and Tommy and Lynn Hodo. He is survived by his twin brother William "Billy" Hodo and wife Rhonda; sister, Marsha Henkhaus and late husband Stephen; sister, Cobi Schmidt and husband Christian; brother, Nathan Taylor and wife Bridget; brother, Michael Paul Hodo and wife Denise; and his late brother Steven Hodo. Mike King (USN) died in Slidell Wednesday, Jan, 27, 2010, at the age of 63. He is survived by his loving mother, Margaret King, sister, Vikki Foster, and brother Joel King, all of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by his dearest friend Deborah Stevens and his church family at First Baptist Church in Slidell. He was born Dec. 7, 1946, in Clovis, N.M., and moved to Ballinger, Texas, as an infant. He received his college degree from the University of Texas. Upon graduation, he was admitted to the Naval Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla., where he was commissioned as an ensign. After receiving his wings at NAS Chase Field in the TF-9J Cougar aircraft, he was assigned to NAS Lemoore, Calif., for fleet aviation training. Upon completion, he was assigned as an A-7E Attack Pilot flying from the flight deck of the USS Enterprise where he accumulated 237 day and 96 night carrier arrested landings. After the Vietnam War ended, where he participated in providing air attack cover for the evacuation, Capt. King flew for Braniff Airways for two years. He later returned to active duty and entered the Navy's C-9B program which provides cargo and passenger support. Some of his assignments here included commanding officer of VR-62 at NAF Detroit, Mich., airwing commander of Fleet Logistics Support Wing at NAS Dallas and commanding officer of the Navy Air Logistics Office in New Orleans. He always attributed his selection to navy captain (0-6) due to the grace of God and his people. Additionally, he was assigned to the vice chief of naval operations air warfare in the Pentagon and commander of Naval Air Forces Atlantic Fleet NAS Norfolk. After retiring from the Navy, he flew B-747 Aircraft for Atlas Air as a first officer transporting cargo internationally. He was based in Miami and mainly flew to South America. He always considered it an honor to reside here in Slidell and was active in volunteer duties. He was a volunteer for the First Baptist Church of Slidell, Red Cross, Life Songs Christian Radio, Amateur Radio and NorthShore Regional Medical Center as an amateur radio operator where he was very active during Hurricane Katrina. His personal organizational memberships included the American Radio and Relay League, Ozone Amateur Radio Club in Slidell, Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason at Fresno, Calif., and Master Mason at Ballinger Lodge 643. He was also an Eagle Scout. Capt. King's military decorations included the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, Air Force Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal, as well as several Unit Citation and Campaign Medals for service in Vietnam, Grenada and Southwest Asia. Private family interment will be at Port Hudson National Cemetery. No flowers please. He will be missed by his sister, Mary; grandchildren, Brent, Stacey, Andrea, Stacy, Jennifer and Nicholas and his great-grandchildren Samuel, Michael and Hailey. He is also missed by nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, cousins by the dozen and his flying buddies. He was born April 1, 1922, April Fool's Day, and he enjoyed a long happy life of 87 years telling jokes. The celebrations of his life was held yesterday at Falgout's Funeral Home in Raceland.
