Beloved wife of the late Robert Rugan Sr., and sister of the late Jimmy Panks. Survived by her brother Eddie Panks and wife Jackie, son Robert Rugan, Jr. and wife Bonnie of Mobile, Al., daughter Gethyn Giordano and husband Ronald of Niceville, Fl; Grandmother of Ronald (Tony) Giordano Jr., Gethyn Phillpott, Robert Rugan III, Elizabeth Rugan, and Great Grandmother of Jordan Phillpott, Audrey Phillpott, Mackenzie Phillpott, Regan Giordano and Ryan Giordano. Helen Rugan was a 1939 graduate of Slidell High School and was very active in church and civic organizations. She was a member of Slidell First United Methodist Church; served as a Sunday school teacher, director of Children's Junior Church, and was awarded life membership in the Women's Society of Christian Services. Helen was a member of XYZ and former President and active organizer of Methodist Church dinner club. She was Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter No.59 and was a member of the Slidell Woman's Civic Club and Queen Samaritan X. In 1959. Helen helped organize the Slidell Bantam Baseball Assoc., held local and state offices in PTA, was the MC for many years of the SHS 50 year club, member of the G.O.S.H., researched and wrote the history of Slidell and delivered that presentation to many organizations and church groups. Helen influenced many young lives by being Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and leader of the Girl Scouts. She helped her husband, Robert, in the Boy Scout Organization for 37 years. In 1959, the American Legion awarded Helen as Woman of the Year. In 1960, the Veterans of Foreign Wars honored her as the Outstanding Woman. Visitation will be at Honaker Funeral Home, Slidell, La. on Sunday 27 June for the family at 6:00 PM and friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Visitation will be at the Slidell First Methodist Church on Monday 28 June at 10 AM with services beginning at 11 AM with Rev. Price and Rev. Marcussen officiating. Interment will be at Slidell Greenwood Cemetery immediately following the church services. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions are made to the First Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 433 Erlanger, Slidell, LA 70458.
