Norman Avis Barton passed away on Friday, July 30, 2010 in Covington, LA. He was 
born on April 16, 1917 in Hagansport, TX and was a resident of Gretna, LA since 
1952.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Billy Joe Alta Dean Barton; one 
daughter, Erin Barton Hernandez (Jorge) and five sons: Brian Barton (Peggy), 
Clinton Barton, Adrian Barton (Judy), Walter Johnson (Ann) and Johnney Johnson 
(Virginia). He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, 
along with many nieces and nephews. 

Norman was preceded in death by his parents Cleo Patrick and Minnie Martin 
Barton and two brothers, Robert and Earl Barton.

Norman graduated from Seymour High School in Seymour, TX. Prior to entering the 
military he worked for the Red River Barge Line in New Orleans, LA. He enlisted 
in the Army on December 3, 1941. Norman was trained as a Marine Engineer and a 
Master Mechanic. He was promoted to Technical Sergeant and Warrant Officer 
before being honorably discharged in 1946. His many military honors include the 
American Defense Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific 
Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.

Norman was later hired as a diesel mechanic/heavy equipment operator for J. Ray 
McDermott in Harvey, LA where he was employed for 30 years until his retirement 
as maintenance shop superintendent in 1980. During his retirement he became 
accomplished in wood working and gardening.

A proud and dedicated Mason, Barton was accepted as a Master Mason into the 
William D. White Lodge 408 F&AM in Gretna, LA on November 30, 1958.

Norman, lovingly known as "Barton", or "Paw Paw Bart", was able to visit and 
enjoy the company of family and friends until his last day, disclosing stories 
of his life with humor, wisdom and wit. He will be missed by his family and 
those who were fortunate enough to know him during his long life.

At Barton's request, there will be no formal services.
