Julius Holden passed away December 30, 2010. He was born December 27, 1947 to the late Percy C. and Vernie Corkern Holden and other than his military, has been a life resident of Covington. The beloved husband of Patricia Wymer Holden, he is survived by two sons: Julius W. Holden and Rodney J. Bauer; three daughters: Tori H. Bauer, Charmaine Holden and Heather L. Hughes; five grandchildren: Robert and Daniel Holden, Hunter, Isaiah and Riley Bauer; two brothers, Lee Roy and Chuck Holden and five sisters: Hilda Sapera, Loretta Jones, Peggy Holden, Jane Dees and Shirley Swanner. He was preceded in death by four sisters: Elois Frere, Leona Holt, Winona Holden and Evelyn Tyson and three brothers: Horace, Tommy and Melvin Holden. At age 20 he entered the U.S. Army and retired as a SFC (E7) after 21 years of service. He served two tours in the Vietnam War and earned numerous medals including: two Bronze Stars, the First Oak Leaf and Second Oak Leaf Army Commendations and was an expert marksman. He served as master gunner in the infantry and tank commander. He was also a lifetime member of both the American Legion Post 16 and the VFW Post 7286. After volunteering for the Covington Fire Department for 26 years, that department honored him with the position of Fire Chief. As Chief he implemented and got approved the first paid firefighters at the Covington Fire Department. He proudly served his country and his community and will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and colleagues. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at New Zion Baptist Church, 17387 New Zion Church Rd., Covington, LA 70435. Visiting hours at the church will begin Thursday at 10:00 AM. Interment at Pilgrim Rest Cemetery will immediately follow services.
