SCHERER, passed away in Bush, La., his home, at the age of 81 years on Friday, December 3, 2010. Fr. Don was a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J. After his retirement he moved to the Archdiocese of New Orleans where he served as a Parish Priest in residence for over 20 years. Fr. Don was born in Jersey City, N.J. on August 14th, 1929 and was the only child of Henry and Rose Scherer. He lived what he preached. He kept the faith. He ran his course and a crown will be laid up for him with all the saints. He attended public schools in Montvale, N.J., where he was both Valedictorian and Salutatorian of his High School graduation class. Fr. Don then attend Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J. where he received a Degree of Bachelor of Arts, in Humanities. He then enrolled in Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. His father died while he was in Graduate School, so Don worked in various electronics shops and TV Stations to pay his tuition. In 1951 he earned a Graduate Degree in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (M.E.) from Stevens Institute of Technology. Upon graduation, he was an instructor for two years at Steven Technical Training Institute where he taught in the Physics Department. He then worked for 9 years in electronic instrumentation with Bendix Aviation. After his mother Rose was able to financially support herself, Fr. Don applied to the Archdiocese of Newark, N. J., to begin studies for the Catholic Priesthood. He attended Immaculate Conception Seminary, South Orange, N.J., where he earned the Degree of Bachelor of Sacred Theology, with majors in Biblical Greek and Hebrew. (S.T.B.) He was ordained a Catholic Priest on May 27, 1967. After ordination, he was assigned as Assistant Pastor at St. Mary's Church, Rutherford, N.J. and later to Immaculate Conception Church in Hackensack, N. J. The Archdiocese of Newark then requested that he be assigned to Seton hall Prepatory High School, where Fr. Don taught Chemistry and Physics for several years. He was also moderator of the Seton Hall's Rifle and Pistol Team, the Scuba Club and the Ham Radio Club. Fr. Don held the airplane pilot ratings of commercial, multi engine, instrument, Flight Instructor and Instrument Flight Instructor. He was a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla No. 49 for 15 years. He was twice elected the flotilla Commander. He will be mourned by many of the priests of the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J. and the Archdiocese of New Orleans, La., along with many friends to whom he ministered. He often said; "Smile God loves you." Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 28088 Main Street, Lacombe, LA on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 12:00 O'clock noon. Interment will follow in St. Benedict's Abby Cemetery, St. Joseph, La. Visitation at the church on Thursday evening from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. and on Friday after 10:00 A.M. until funeral time.
