She is the beloved wife of the late Merritt Stevens Bumpas. She is survived by her daughter Stacey B. Hayden, son-in-law Richard A. (Rusty) Hayden, grandson Robert Stevens Hayden, son Merritt S. Bumpas and his partner Billie Holden. Jean was born in Jackson, MS on April 4, 1938, to the late Dr. Lauch Hughes and Zella Harris Hughes. She attended Central High School and was the first Miss Murrah High in Jackson. She graduated Vanderbilt University with a degree in education, returned home, married and taught in the Jackson Public School system. In 1966, Steve and Jean moved to Covington, LA where they were residents of Tchefuncta Club Estates and active members of Tchefuncta Country Club and Christ Episcopal Church until their deaths. Jean and Steve travelled extensively and also maintained a home in Highlands Falls, NC where they were active members of Highlands Falls Country Club and the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Highlands. She is also survived by her sister Jackie Hughes Meena and her brother-in-law Dr. Albert Meena of Madison, MS. and Highlands Falls, NC. Jean is the sister-in- law of Andrew and Kayneil Bumpas of Mandeville, LA, and Susie McGee Bumpas of Metairie, LA and Wildcat Cliffs, NC. She is the aunt of Kathy M. Fountain (Walter) of Madison, Lauch Meena of St. Petersburg, FL and Guy H. Bumpas IV (Hayley) of Metairie. Additionally, she has a great nephew, two great nieces, two grand nieces and two grand nephews. Jean will be missed by so many friends. They include: "The Holy Folders," "The Monday Night Group," "The Friday Lunch Bunch," her "Highlands Bridge Friends," "The Four J's," and many, many others. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 129 North New Hampshire Street, Covington, LA, on Friday, May 6, 2011. Visitation will begin at 2:00pm in the Church. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Covington. The family would appreciate contributions in Jean's name to Christ Episcopal Church, Covington, LA and/or the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Highlands, NC. ===================
