Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/sttammany/obits/dateobits/2011/st1106.htm and click to view list of photos. ========== James Willett Sanderfer, age 88, took his final steps toward Eternal Rest on June 6, 2011, the 67th anniversary of D-Day. General Omar Bradley, Commander, 1st Division of the United States Army, commented after World War II that "every man who set foot on Omaha Beach was a hero." Jim was our hero; a husband, father, and grandfather. He will be sorely missed by anyone who had the pleasure to know and visit with him. Devoted husband of 64 years to Dorothy Zuber Sanderfer; father of Becky S. Miller, her husband Tom, their children Jimmy, Laura, Mary-Margaret and Rod; father of Susan S.Thibodeaux, her two daughters, Erica T. Kohn and Emily T. Wallace. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Walter T. and Lilly McKelvey Sanderfer; his brothers Lesley T., Thomas W., Oran M., Woodrow W., Marion W., and Rankin R. Sanderfer, and his sisters, Lucille S. Jones, Effie S. Levingston, infant Mildred Sanderfer, Bobbie S. Pengelley, and Ann S. Faulkner. Jim was born on Veterans Day, November 11, 1922, and raised in Port Lavaca, TX. He resided in Houma for 53 years and his final 6 years in Covington. Jim served as Staff Sergeant in the 49th Mobile Support Group of the United States Army, landing June 9, 1944, on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. He was employed by Freeport Sulphur Co. (Freeport-McMoran) for 41 years, his final years as power plant supervisor of the Grand Isle Mine. In Houma, he was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church, and as health permitted, he worshiped at First Baptist Church in Covington. After retirement, he spent many years traveling and camping with Dorothy, enjoying the outdoors and making friends. Jim's family offers their sincere thanks to Lakeview Regional Medical Center for their kindness and personal attention. Appreciation also goes out to Lakeshore Hospice and Ameracare Home Health. Family, friends and neighbors are invited to a celebration of Jim's life to be held on Saturday, June 25th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with eulogy and music at 1 p.m., at the home of Becky and Tom Miller, 123 Tchefuncte Dr., located in Country Club Estates, Covington, LA. ===================
