Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/sttammany/obits/dateobits/2011/st1107.htm and click to view list of photos. ========== Howard Joseph Hardenstein, 87, of Mandeville passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 3, 2011. He was born in Lacombe, Louisiana on December 5, 1923. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Merryl Chopin Hardenstein; his daughter, Kay McKee (Billy); stepson, Gilbert Jacobs, III; and stepdaughters, M'Liss Whitten, Holly Knight and Merryl Heap (Michael) as well as four grandsons. Howard was a decorated Naval officer who served in three wars during his 26-year career, including World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He enlisted as a recruit in 1942 and retired as a lieutenant in 1968. He was involved in the Polaris Missile Program while serving on the destroyer tender Observation Island. Before retiring he was Commander of the Naval Reserve Training Center in Mobile, Alabama. He was instrumental in the formation of a local Sea Scouts group and encouraged young men with love for sailing and the sea. Howard was a talented boat builder and built three sailboats. Howard was a weapons specialist in the Navy and worked in the aerospace and marine industries following completion of his Navy career. His work took him to Kwajalein Island in the south Pacific working for contractors in the Apollo missile program. Since retirement he has remained active in the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) where he was a charter member of Ozone Chapter. He also spent many hours pursuing his hobby of genealogy. Howard loved life and had a warm-hearted spirit and infectious laugh. His generosity and compassion for others touched the lives of many as they trudged the road of happy destiny. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
