George Lightfoot was called to eternal rest July 2, 2011, while at his home in Slidell. He was the loving husband of the late Roberta Sighinolfi Lightfoot for 64 years and went to his heavenly home the day before their 66th wedding anniversary so they could celebrate that occasion together. He was born in Benton, Wis., and lived in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., until being called into the U.S. Army. He served his country bravely during Worlf War II and saw action in the Pacific theater, specifically in Papua, New Guinea. He was extremely proud but a very modest World War II veteran. George moved to New Orleans in 1946 and has been a resident of Slidell for 32 years. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his youngest son, Roger, his parents Samuel and Mabel Lightfoot, and his three brothers, Loren, Lester and Howard Lightfoot. He is survived by sons Rick and wife Joanne, Larry and wife Carlye, and daughter-in-law Janet D. Lightfoot. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. The family is requesting that anyone interested in honoring George would do so with a memorial gift to the National World War II Museum, 945 Magazine St., NOLA or to the hospice organization of your choice. Serenity Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. ===================
