A native of Tulsa, Okla., he had lived in Slidell for the past 40 years. He was the beloved husband of Sue Wilborn Cartmill for the past 56 years, and the loving father of John W. Cartmill, Herndon, Va., Alice C. Faciane, of Slidell, Hillary C. Toups, of Slidell and the late Robert H. Cartmill, Jr.; father-in-law of Wendy Cartmill and Daniel Toups; grandfather of Kelly Faciane, Jessica Dyess, June and Georgia Cartmill; Melanie, Eric and Meghan Toups; and great-grandfather of Brayden Dyess. He is also survived by his brother, John Craig Cartmill of Broken Arrow, Okla. Robert was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., and earned a Ph.D. in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. His broad work experience included engineering, hydrology, meteorology, teaching and farming. After retiring from NASAÕs Earth Resources Laboratory, he worked as an investment adviser and later wrote a book, ÒThe Next Hundred Years, Then and Now,Ó comparing predictions made at the beginning of the twentieth and twenty- first centuries. He served as an adjunct professor of meteorology at the University of New Orleans. He was a long-time supporter of UNO, where several scholastic awards bear his name. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West, Slidell, with visitation from 9 Ð 11 a.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the UNO Foundation, Homer Hitt Alumni Center, 2000 Lakeshore Drive, New Orleans, LA 70148.
