He was born in Bogalusa, LA on November 28, 1943 and baptized in 1953 with membership at the Westside Emmanuel Baptist Church in Bogalusa. He attended Bogalusa City Schools, was a graduate of Chamberlain Hunt Military Academy in Port Gibson, MS and attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA. He was retired from the Mandeville Police Department and worked many years with Offshore Navigation, Inc. specializing in seismograph testing. He was a Veteran with two tours of duty in Viet Nam as a Seabee with the U.S. Navy. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Viet Nam Campaign Medal and the Viet Nam Service Medal. He was a special Naval Escort to President Lyndon B. Johnson when the President visited Hawaii on an extended tour in the l960’s. Officer Sullivan’s work with the Mandeville Police Department was a very important part of his life and an extension of his personal commitment to Public Service. He was the first Community Policeman assigned to serve at Mandeville High School as a School Resource Officer. He served in this capacity for eleven years. He was dedicated to the protection and welfare of the students and their families. A recent football game was dedicated to him by the staff and students of Mandeville High School. He was honored and humbled on this occasion as with other events in his honor such as the “Soiree” held at the Trailhead in Mandeville last March to benefit the “Charles ‘Silky’ Sullivan Scholarship” fund established by the Mandeville Police Foundation for Mandeville High School students who want to attend a trade school instead of attending college or a university. He was also active in the D.A.R.E. program at a national, state and local level to promote and increase the awareness of drug abuse and drug-related issues. He was affiliated with several veterans and civic organizations such as Northshore Kiwanis, the local VFW Chapter, and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was recognized as Lawman of the Year 2010-2011 by the LA-MS-West TENN District of Kiwanis International. He was an avid New Orleans Saints fan and celebrated with friends at every game. He was the same about the LSU Tigers and the Mandeville High School Skippers. He loved to fish and hunt with special friends at the hunting camp in Utica, MS as well as his close friends at the fishing locations at Delacroix, LA and elsewhere. Officer Sullivan is survived by his wife, Bonnie Bernstein Sullivan; his son, Charles Henry “Trey” Sullivan III (Alexis) of Suwanee, GA; his daughter, Cassindana “Cassie” Sullivan Kropp (Kelly) of Fairhope, AL; his four wonderful grandchildren, Casey Brooks and Emma Jean Kropp and Chloe Elise and Quinn Charles Sullivan; and a very special friend, Cassandra “Sandy” Sullivan to whom he was first married and the devoted mother and grandmother of his children and grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Jean Sullivan Pigott (Larry) of Pearl River, LA and Tallahassee, FL; one brother-in-law, Lloyd Remel of Mize, MS and numerous nephews, nieces and extended family; his stepsons, Joshua Bernstein of Los Angeles, CA and Adam Bernstein of Washington, DC; and his father-in-law, Paul Weitzenkorn of Lauderhill, FL. Visitation AT THE CHURCH will begin at 1:30 PM. The family wishes to thank his loving caregivers from Lakeshore Hospice and Elizabeth Gomes of R&R Solutions. Fielding Funeral Home of Covington, LA. ===================
