She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Theo Hirsch Harvey, and by her daughters Nancy Strong Harvey Hales (Stephen), Elizabeth Strong Harvey Haughey (Kenneth), seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Known to her family and friends by her childhood name, “Baboo,” Barbara was a graduate of Metairie Park Country Day School and Newcomb College, where she majored in art. She was active in her community, serving on the board of Metairie Park Country Day School, and as a member of the Junior League of New Orleans and the Garden Committee of Longue Vue House and Gardens. She was a member and served as President of the New Orleans Garden Study Club. Barbara loved the mountains, and for many years spent time at her home in Highlands, North Carolina, where she was a reliable guide to innumerable mountain trails. An avid and knowledgeable horticulturist, she could identify plants both in tended gardens and in the wild. A vigorous and competitive athlete, she excelled in tennis and golf, winning the state 40’s tennis doubles championship and innumerable golf tournaments. She took pride in demonstrating repeatedly that the men on fishing trips didn’t always catch the most fish. She devoted much of her time and energy to children, not only in raising her own family but also as a teacher at Newcomb Nursery School, where a generation of children benefitted from her delight in helping them to learn and grow. Her favorite Junior League assignment was as a “Puppeteer,” presenting puppet shows in New Orleans public schools. She also volunteered in the Trinity Early Education Program, an enrichment program for underprivileged children. Fittingly, and in keeping with her wishes, Barbara’s ashes will be scattered in a garden in a private service with her family. She was always happy planting and tending her gardens at home, in North Carolina, and, finally, at Christwood Retirement Community in Covington. Barbara and Theo conceived and planted a beautiful nature trail at Christwood which became known as the Harvey Trace. This pleasant trail, filled with lush native plantings, was a place Barbara loved to visit as long as she was able to do so. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 3:00PM on Wednesday, November 30, at Christwood Retirement Community, 100 Christwood Blvd., Covington, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, donations to the John A. Lohman Fund at Christwood, or to the charity of your choice, are preferred. ===================
