EARL MITCHELL, of Slidell, LA, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at his home in Slidell, LA. He was 101 years of age. He was born in Boonesmill, VA on January 30, 1910, the son of Martha and Zion Mitchell. He was the beloved husband of the late Vera Woodie Mitchell. He was the eldest of six children preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Harouff and Ruth Mitchell and brother Paul Mitchell. Two brothers, Dr. Floyd Mitchell of Martinsburg, VA and Dr. Olden Mitchell of North Manchester, IN survived him. He graduated from Daleville Academy (High School), Bridge Water College in 1931 and Bethany Theology Seminary in 1940. Dr. Mitchell served as pastor of The Church of the Brethren in Brownsville, MD, Naperville, IL, Westminster, MD, First Church at Roanoke, VA and Mill Creek, Port Republic, VA. Upon retiring he worked two years in small churches across the country, part time minister at two churches in the Boones’ Mill, VA area, Bridgewater Church in Bridge Water, VA, and also the Bridge Water College in Bridge Water, VA. In 1996 he and his wife moved to Slidell to be close to their daughter. They became associate members of First United Methodist Church in Slidell. For the last 10 years he has been a resident of Azalea Estates Assisted Living. He is survived by two children, Karen Allen of Slidell and David Mitchell (Alice) of New Port, OR; four grandchildren, April Allen Crosby (Curtis) of Baton Rouge, LA, Robert Lewis Allen (Brenda) of Dallas, TX, Erin Harwayner (Josh) of Monterrey, CA and Danielle Mitchell (Michael Emarco) of Seattle, WA and eight great grandchildren, Hannah and Jackson Crosby, Brooke, Corbin, Grant and Landon Allen and John Paul and Jack Harwayner. The family wishes to express appreciation to Azalea Estates Assisted Living, ComForcare Senior Services and St. Josh Hospice for their love and care during his later years. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at HONAKER FUNERAL HOME, 1751 GAUSE Blvd. WEST (IN FOREST LAWN CEMETERY), Slidell, LA on Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held at First united Methodist Church, 433 Erlanger St., Slidell, LA on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 11:00am.
