Burga passed away Saturday, December 10, 2011 in Covington, LA from end stage kidney disease. He was born in New Orleans on January 6, 1924 to the late Mary Burnette and Charles Burga. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Walker and two brothers, Charles and Bruce Burga. John is survived by his daughter, Joan E. Burga; one son, John E. Burga, Jr. and three granddaughters: Kristin, Lindsay and Allison Burga. Mr. Burga served his country in the Army Air Corp., as a primary flight instructor and Randolph Field in Texas and as a fighter pilot in the Asiatic- Pacific Campaign earning the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Theatre Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal. This was during the China Offensive and was serving with the Fourteenth Air Force. He was honorably discharged as First Lieutenant. After the war, he spent several years with the Air National Guard. Later he flew briefly for Chicago and Southern Airlines before becoming a Captain for Delta Air Lines. He retired from his commercial career after 30 years. He flew Stearmans, AT-6’s, DC-3’s up to finishing his career in Stretch DC-8’s. His favorite plane was his fighter, The Lightening P- 38. He also was a home builder for many years and developed land in Metairie, LA and Picayune, MS. He was very proud to achieve the 32nd Degree Mason with Metairie Lodge #444. A dedicated football and baseball fan, he was also a minor league pitcher. With great faith in God and Country, dad’s last wishes would be to express his undying love to his family and to encourage us to pray for this, our Great Country, the United States of America. A time to visit and share memories honoring Captain Burga will begin at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Graveside services and military honors at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens (adjacent to the funeral home) will take place at 3:00 PM. ===================
