Beloved Husband of 62 years to Joan Springmann DiLeo. Loving father of James J. DiLeo, Jr.(JoAnn), Jan DiLeo Mickey(John) and the late John A. DiLeo. Son of the late Antonino DiLeo and Esther Bacino DiLeo. Brother of Dr. Lucas DiLeo(Doris), the late Carlo DiLeo, Joseph DiLeo, Rose DiLeo and John DiLeo. Also survived by grandchildren, James “Jay” DiLeo, III, Jennifer L. DiLeo, Claire E. Mickey, David F. Mickey and John “Jake” Mickey, a great granddaughter, Juliet Rose DiLeo and by many cherished nieces and nephews. Dr. DiLeo was a native of New Orleans and a resident of Slidell for the past 28 years. A proud 1943 graduate of Warren Easton High School, he was inducted into the Warren Easton Alumni Hall of Fame. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist Mate. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Loyola University School of Dentistry in 1952. He was appointed to the staffs of Montelepre Hospital and Chalmette General Hospital. He retired after 32 years from private practice in 1984 and then spent the next 25 years as the Dental Administrator and Director of Dental Services for the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office at Parish Prison until he retired in 2010 at the age of 83. Dr. DiLeo was elected to the Academy of General Dentistry in 1972 and awarded a Fellowship in 1981. He was on the Faculty of L.S.U. School of Dentistry from 1979-1989, teaching as an Assistant Clinical Professor. He served as an Assistant to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office in Forensic Dentistry. He testified as an Expert Dental Witness in numerous civil and federal court cases. In 1964 he was the State Treasurer for the L.B. Johnson Presidential Campaign and was a Delegate to the National Democratic Convention in Atlantic City, N.J. He was an active member in the American, Louisiana, and New Orleans Dental Associations, New Orleans Dental Study Group, C. Victor Vignes Honorary Dental Fraternity, Xi Psi Phi Professional Dental Fraternity and Upsilon Beta Lambda Fraternity. A longtime member of the New Orleans Athletic Club and served on its Board of Directors from 1963-1966. He was a member of the Italian Cultural Society, the Sons of Italy, American Legion, and a past member of the Knights of Babylon. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Slidell, a past member of the Ushers Society of St. Mary’s Italian Church and St. Louis Cathedral. He was awarded by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate for outstanding work for the Order and also recognized by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart for services performed. Jimmy was a generous man, always ready to help others. He treated strangers as friends and friends as family. The family would like to thank Dr. Victor Echenique and the staff of Slidell Memorial Hospital for their compassionate treatment and care.
