Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/sttammany/obits/dateobits/2012/st1201.htm and click to view list of photos. ========== Wilbur Samuel Herbert Slie passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at age 85. A native of New Orleans, Mr. Slie resided in Bush, LA since 1993 in the beautiful home that he and his wife built together. Mr. Slie retired from the Union-Pacific Railroad after 42 years of service as an engineer beginning with steam locomotives and ending with diesel engines. He crossed the ocean eleven times while serving in the Merchant Marines during WW II and was also stationed in Italy and France. Mr. Slie was a 32nd degree Mason and belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Metairie, LA. Mr. Slie was a charming person with a quick sense of humor and positive attitude. He most valued his family, friends, hard work and education. An avid music lover, he played the piano and began viola lessons at the age of 78. He had a phenomenal knowledge of classical music. He was an excellent chef and enjoyed his pets and riding his bicycle through the neighborhood. Mr. Slie was preceded in death by his son, Herbert Samuel Slie. He is survived by his wife of 55years, Ernestine Thompson Slie; seven children, Mildred Padgett, Juliana Padgett, Deborah Slie, Martha Garcia, Katherine Fertitta, Jonathan Slie and Betty Damiani; one sister, Martha Nosacka; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral services at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM with visitation on Saturday from 9:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in Caney Baptist Church Cemetery in Lumberton, MS at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Mr. Slie be made to Jerusalem Baptist Church, 24479 Hwy 40, Bush, LA 70431. ===================
